Chapter 1 Reading

Chapter 1 Journal:

After reading chapter one, I have realized that I only read stories to read them. If I read a book for school, I rarely annotate any of it, and when I do make notes, they tend to be short and sweet. Any comments about the book or poem I am reading I leave out. When I am reading a novel or short story, I don’t try and look into the deeper meaning behind the story; I simply read it to find out what happens to the main or secondary characters. Although I do enjoy reading the book this way, I probably don’t get the full meaning out of the novel the author wants me to get. That said, however, I dislike reading novels to analyze the meaning behind them. Personally speaking, I don’t want to think hard enough to find the meaning behind every little word the author puts into his or her essay. I don’t believe every author puts that much thought into their writing to have a deeper meaning behind the text, and I think some authors truly just desire the reader to enjoy the novel he or she is reading. When reading a work of literature or the textbook for class, one must annotate and take notes furiously to remember key terms and points. However, this can be very daunting, and it ruins the enjoyment the novel intended to give us. I read a book to make me happy and pass the time, but is that really a bad thing?
