Writing Prompts - Reunion

Jan 11, 2009 19:54

Ahhh - Reunions are great aren't they?  They are filled with the excitement of people who haven't seen each other in a while.  Sometimes though, there is so much chatter that you don't get to see or chat with everyone you wanted to.

Today was one of those days.  At our Nano reunion, I was able to chat with about half of the group.  They are really awesome people.  It is always wonderful to see them.

We've decided to declare a short story writing day next month.  The goal will be to write 6,000 - 7,500 words in the one day of writing. Should be a lot of fun.  Can I come up with a short story that would work?  maybe.  I am thinking about the house story again.  We'll see.

We used a writing prompt today.  Here is the prompt followed by my treatment (in VERY rough condition):

Prompt - first line: The cigarette pack was the only thing he left behind.

The cigarette pack was the only thing he left behind. Caroline picked it up and held it close to her heart. There were still six cigarettes in the back, slightly bent much like her heart.

She wondered why he had felt that he had to go. He did that in the dark of night, while she slept cuddled to his side or so she had thought. When she had fallen asleep, she had draped her long limbs over his like a blanket, using the beat of his heart to put her to sleep.

Darren had entered her life a few months ago on a warm sunny day. As if by magic, he just appeared at her register at the book store. She thought appeared because the register was by the door and she had never seen him walk in. There were only two main aisles of books, so he couldn't have been hiding anywhere. She entered through the back door and knew it to be locked.

Then suddenly he was in front of her, wishing to buy a book. She didn't even remember what book it was. She just remembered being mesmerized by his deep blue eyes that seemed out of place with his jet black hair and tanned skin.

She did not remember how long she stared at him, but Darren never appeared to be uncomfortable. His face seemed glow with the smile that got bigger the longer she looked at him. Finally he had said, “I would like to buy this book.”

Caroline had blushed, knowing she was very close to drooling. “Um, yes, how can I help you?” she stammered.

“The book,” he said smiling, “I would like to buy.”

“Oh yes, we sell books here,” she said smiling back.

“I see that. Could I buy this one?” he had gestured to the book he had laying on the counter.

“I am sorry, yes, you can buy that,” she stammered again and then quickly rang up the sale. She thought he had paid in cash but didn't remember. She just remembered looking at him.

After she had bagged his purchase, he had asked if there was a place around town where he could get a cup of coffee and sit and read his new book.

“Actually where I like to go read is in the park, over there,” she pointed out the window. “The restaurant sells a great cup of coffee and you can get it to go.”

“Will you be over there today?” he asked.

“As soon as the store closes,” she said shyly. “I will leave here in the next half hour.”

“I can wait in the park for you and then we can get our coffee. If that is good with you?” he asked.

Caroline had nodded quickly all the while thinking, “Hell yes.”
