Disclaimer: Like any one cares. Everyone knows that PotC belongs to Disney and this is just sad fanfiction.
Warnings: Character Death.
Notes: This takes place after Jack escapes Port Royal at the end of the first film. The scene with Will, Elizabeth, Norrington, and Gov. Swann plays out differently, thus this is AU.

Consequential

It had seemed so easy at the time. The line between right and wrong as plain as day and night. He could not let Jack die.
Will knows that Jack won’t be coming to his rescue. Jack is a good man, but he’s still a pirate.
Elizabeth’s eyes meet his across the way and he gives her a little half-smile. She bursts into tears and Will looks away.
There is no legal route anyone could employ to spare Will his fate. Will understands this. Accepts it.
The floor drops out beneath him.
“I will face the consequences of my actions.”

(end)

This fic was around 600 words, and then I hacked it down to a drabble. This is the original.

“I will face the consequences of my actions.”
Will closes his eyes as a bead of sweat rolls over his brow. The sun is being particularly harsh this day -- it’s barely past dawn and it feels like midday. Sweat makes his sleeves cling to his arms, makes the thick length of rope around his neck itch and rub against his skin. He wants to scratch against it. His hands are bound in front of him tightly.
“I will face the consequences of my actions.”
It had seemed so easy at the time. The line between right and wrong as plain as day and night. He could not let Jack die. Jack was a good man. He didn’t deserve to die for doing the right thing. Will could never have lived with himself if he had allowed it to happen.
He opens his eyes and looks at the crowd, eagerly awaiting his death, clustered around him. He’s known some of the spectators for years through the smithy. People he’s respected, admired, pitied… all of them come to the spectacle that is his execution.
Will knows that Jack won’t be coming to his rescue. He doesn’t even allow himself to hope. Jack is a good man, but he’s still a pirate. He won’t be risking his own neck -- not again -- to save Will.
His eyes seek out Elizabeth and he finds her quickly. She’s standing by her father and Commodore Norrington. Her eyes meet his and he gives her a little half-smile. She bursts into tears and Will looks away. This is not how he wants to remember her. Elizabeth is a strong woman, a good woman. He’s loved her since he met her on the crossing from England, a beautiful angel watching over him. She’s been the light in his world for years. How could she return that love? How could she claim to? She barely knows him at all, and now she‘ll never have the chance.
Commodore Norrington looks troubled, as though he wishes to be anywhere but here, watching this. When Will was arrested, Elizabeth had protested for hours, screaming to anyone who would listen that it wasn’t right, that she couldn’t let this happen. Will had overheard her father telling her that the Commodore was bound by the law. There was no legal route anyone could employ to spare Will his fate. Will understands this. He catches Norrington’s eye and gives him a small nod of acknowledgement. Norrington returns it.
“I will face the consequences of my actions.”
The sun peeked over the horizon two hours ago, and Will had stood by the platform, savoring the feel of the dawning light against his face. His last sunrise. A guard held him by each arm and he watched as the preparations were made for his hanging. They’d checked the trap right in front of him, tugged on the noose to see if the rope would break. A priest had spoken to him earlier, but the words had washed over him without being absorbed.
Now, it’s finally time. They read his crimes aloud, but all Will can hear is the roar of the ocean, right behind his ear. A breeze rushes through and he closes his eyes at the sensation of wind against his skin. He draws a deep breath and opens his eyes in time to see a flash of gold over the edge of the stone wall.
Then the floor drops out from beneath him.
“I will face the consequences of my actions.”
(end)

This thing is so getting a sequel. Or two.

[EDIT] The sequel is posted here.
