Supreme Court

I wonder if the Harriet Miers fiasco will turn out to have been a very smart political ploy. It would be funny if it was supposed to be a ploy (ie, get the Dems to filibuster, then nominate Alito- waaaay worse politically- and make them look bad if they try to filibuster again), but Bush forgot to tell the Senate Republicans until it was too late.

This fight should be far more interesting than Roberts. I think Roberts was a perfect candidate for Bush to nominate- not so out there that it could be claimed he was only nominated for his politics, well-qualified, and still good for the base. Alito is a little further right, a little more Scalia, and a little more scary (understatement of the post?). But I still think he will get confirmed. And I think he should. Politics sucks, but the way the constitution works means a well-qualified candidate who has actually thought about constitutional law before shouldn't be turned down because of partisan politics. However, if the Democrats don't TRY to do anything, I think they kill their support. Maybe a new party will rise: the "Democrats and Republicans both suck ass, and I can't tell the difference anymore, so I'm just going to run myself" Party. I'd laugh.

Sigh, I've become so cynical in the past two years. I used to at least be politically optimistic. I didn't like what was going on, but I thought maybe sometime it would change. Now, I have no hope. I'm pretty sure that no matter what happens in the next 5 years, it won't be anything I like. Doesn't mean I won't keep fighting for what I believe in, just that I'm prepared to have absolutely no impact.
