Wow. What an amazing week it's been, and it's only Thursday. Let's see...
Last Thursday Jeff flew to Pittsburgh to be with his family awaiting the imminent death of his dear father. His death took place on Sunday morning after a totally amazing few days for them all, ending with Dad opening his eyes just before drawing his last breath. Jeff and his mom were able to say a few last words to him before he went. The end was very peaceful and brought several years of agony from Parkinson's disease to a close. Please see the piece that ran in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: www.pittsburghlive.com;/x/tribune-review/obituaries/print_298984.html
I have been taking care of Willow, Jeff's old doggie, which has been quite an ordeal. She is very needy and it reminds me of having a small baby around. Phew. I will be glad when he gets back, for many reasons, of course, but that is a big one. I think I am too selfish to take care of small children anymore. It is for the young. I will try to be more understanding and patient, but it is hard to do with sleep deprivation from dog sitting.
Saturday evening I had dinner with Judie and David and then we went to see Riverfolk play. It was really a nice evening and I am reminded, once again, why I have chosen them to play at our party this summer (mark your calendars: July 30, 2005). We will also be inviting everyone to bring their instruments for a long-overdue Hootenanny (don't you just love that word?). Sunday I went to the meeting of my book club and it was really nice to see everyone. We started meeting four years ago (!) when most of the members were single or newly married, and now they are the happy parents of assorted children.
At work, I have almost completed my time in the Provost's Office. My last day is tomorrow, and I leave at noon to pick up Jeff from the airport. There was a going-away party for me today, and there were quite a few people there. I am sad to leave all my friends and friendly co-workers in Morrill Hall, but I am really excited about my new job. I start Monday, and went for PeopleSoft training this morning. I will only be across the bridge on the West Bank, so I will have to make good on my promises to meet them for lunch from time to time.
Tuesday evening I had an incredible Shiatsu massage. Boy did I need that. Sheesh! It took two days to recover, but I am ready for another one now. I am also having Rolfing done, and have found a practitioner who doesn't believe in unnecessary pain. I am going to be so limber after all this. Which is good, since I can hardly see over my shoulder to change lanes with all this stress I am packing into my life suddenly.
(I think I have forgotten how to speak English. When I read this back, it sounds like it has been translated from the Swedish. Oh, well...)
So, on into the future! I will soon have a new name, a new husband, and a new house. Wow, double wow. I am really looking forward to seeing my wandering children again. It seems like they have been gone for years. Well, Alex left in 2004, so I guess that was last year, anyway.
And now I will go check on Ms. Doggie and see if I can muster the strength and fortitude to take her for a walk. It is perfick walking weather, so I am sure she will appreciate it.
Ta ta for now!
