Quote of the Day

"what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit, and it's over."
-President George W. Bush to Tony Blair
He didn't know his microphone was turned on. (Citation for full quote.) Another unintended gem, on the press conference:I'm just going to make it up. I'm not going to talk too damn long like the rest of them. Some of these guys talk too long.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the President of the United States of America. [headslaps]

While it's not clear who "they" are in the first quote, my suspicion is that he's talking about Israel, essentially saying pressure needs to be put on that country. Military pressure? Who knows. Given some of the recent news coming out of Iraq (remember that bloodbath? Anyone?), and other news that Sunni parties have started pleading with American commanders for more troops as Shia violence against them increases, including violence instigated by the American trained Iraqi security forces (no citation - I'm short on time today) which the US seems woefully unprepared to deal with (a surprise to you all, I know), I wonder if the temptation for Syria and Iran might be to widen the war and try to kick America out of Iraq. I bet they could do it, too, as long as the US didn't resort to the use of nuclear weapons. The only way sufficient numbers to halt an Iranian offensive could be found would be via a draft, and that would take upward of 2 years to have the new troops sufficiently trained to actually get on the ground. Probably not enough time. The whole thing is so terrifyingly up in the air right now, and I think Bush's comments above illustrate just how hopelessly out of his league he is.
