Hey there, LiveJournal.
This Emily can't sleep and you know what that means: IT'S TIME FOR AN UPDATE ABOUT MY GUM SCULPTURE!
I've been working on it for months now, adding chewed gum each day, and I have to say that its weight is much heftier than one might expect of chewed gum.
Here she is (you can see the piece of pink bubble tape that I chewed today, on top):
The original plan was a tree. I'm about to begin to extend the branches from the (unintentionally phallic) trunk. But here comes my dilemma!
I've become very captivated by the shape of Frank Black's head. And I think that there is nothing that it would look better recreated in than a gum sculpture. I think the 3-D effect of a bunch of wads of gum would work so well with the interesting lumps of his head.
The grass could be a green turtle neck. And his features might be easier to execute than branches on a tree.
I'm not especially qualified to do this though. While I may be a lumps-on-Frank-Black's-head enthusiast, I haven't gotten that into his music. I love the Pixies, but I didn't even like 80% of Trompe Le Monde.
I think that I am going to continue with the tree and then, if the branches don't hold up, I will abandon that and pursue the Frank Black Gum Bust.
I also think that once I add different shades of green gum to the grass and built it up, and give it branches, and maybe some roots, and lush spearminty and sour-green-appley folliage, it will be Smithsonian worthy.
