Summary: Kara reflects on Lee's position as commander of Pegasus.
14 - Lee had never wanted the burden of command but now that he was stuck with it, he seemed to fill the role with ease.
COMMAND
Kara listened intently as Lee briefed the command officers on the day's schedule. He was decidedly less formal than Cain, opting to have everyone seated comfortably in his quarters, on the plush furniture arranged in a u-shaped configuration. The difference it made to have the commander sitting right among his group of officers instead of looming behind a huge table was palpable. Where Cain ignored opinions that differed from her own and ruled with an iron will, Lee encouraged independent thinking among his officers and respected what they had to offer. That sense of camaraderie had won over the entire crew.
They followed Cain out of fear, but followed Lee out of loyalty.
Fisk might have been friendlier than his predecessor, but his double dealing wasn't limited to the ships in the fleet. More than a few of the Pegasus crew had bite marks on their ass from his tenure as commander. And they had the scars to prove it. Some of them still double checked the duty rosters to make sure they wouldn't be caught out by a last minute change…courtesy of one of Fisk's trademark payoffs.
They'd followed him because they had to…they followed Lee because they wanted to.
Garner was another story altogether. Her lack of regard for the man colored her perception, but his rigid style wasn't liked by most of the people she worked closely with. His abhorrence for pilots had Stinger and Showboat cursing his every decision. On the other hand, the crew below decks sang his praises…and she could respect that he was a good leader to them. They relied on exact measurements and precise numbers, following a text book that had all the answers. Command wasn't about following a stringent set of rules. It was about knowing when to be flexible without breaking, working every advantage, and having confidence you and your officers would make the right call.
Garner lacked those abilities and it everyone knew it. If Lee had doubts about anything, it rarely showed.
His crew respected him, had faith in his ability to lead them and worked hard because he did. Lee had never wanted the burden of command but now that he was stuck with it, he seemed to fill the role with ease.
And unless Kara missed her guess…he even thrived on it.
Even she enjoyed it. After all, how many commanders would let her get away with saying 'I told you so' on a regular basis?
