FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX

Kara scanned the crowd breaking up after the commissioning of the Blackbird.

She’d flown a brand new ship…one they built themselves.

Her giddy joy with that fact was underscored only by the panic she’d heard in Lee’s voice when she popped back into the fleet’s space. She really wanted to catch Lee alone and apologize for frakking with him. As much as it killed her to admit it, she’d been damn relieved the short jump was successful.

But when she hopped back and heard Lee’s voice over the wireless she couldn’t resist messing with him a little. After all…he’d done nothing but bitch about what they were doing and never thought they’d get the Blackbird in the air.

Well they had.

And it flew. A little roughly, but it flew.

Still perusing the milling group, Kara didn’t see Lee anywhere on the flight deck.

Off to pout, maybe?

It probably wasn't fair of her, but Lee could be such an ass sometimes. She took off down the corridor and made her way to the pilots’ quarters. Figuring she would grab her gear and hit the showers then hunt him down. She didn’t expect to find Lee, minus his flight suit, sitting in front of his locker with his head hanging down. His posture a dejected slump, he didn’t even look up when she entered.

Lee heard someone come into quarters, but he didn’t want company right now. Kara’s little stunt might have been amusing to most - hell, even he’d gone along with the humor when she jumped back - but those long seconds of worrying she was gone forever hit him hard. It figured she'd been sitting right in front of him, completely dark, while he practically fell apart in the cockpit.

Just the sort of thing she’d get a kick out of.

And it was funny…at first…but reaction had set in and he just couldn't laugh anymore.

He thought he’d lost her.

Again.

The memory of her jumping in the Raider, to go back to Caprica, spun through his mind. Mildly pissed would be a good description for what he felt now.

No way in hell would Kara have ever made a good test was pilot.

Way too reckless.

The image, of her disappearing in front of him a second time, played through his head as a small shudder went through his body.

Yep…pouting.

Kara snorted as she yanked open her locker door, “Gods, prove you wrong and you don’t even stick around to take the heat.” She stripped off her flight suit while she talked, her back to Lee. She missed seeing him sit up straight and the narrow-eyed look he shot her way. “I told you it would fly.” She smirked over her shoulder and  was about to apologize for frakking with him, but the look of pain on his face stopped her short.

Oh gods…not pouting…

Lee bounded off the bench. "You think it matters that it frakking flew?" He grabbed Kara by the arms and practically shouted. “Don't you get it, Kara?" He let go of her, turned away then spun right back again. "I thought I’d lost you.” Scrubbing his hand over his face, he caught her cynical eye roll. It collided with the cold pit of dread in his stomach and he couldn't deal with it.

When she opened her mouth to speak, he snapped. “Don’t. Just don’t.” He did not want one of her standard ‘Starbuck’ comebacks so he walked away from her to pace out his frustration.

Well frak.

Lee's words had caught her completely off guard. Here she was ready to apologize and she couldn’t get a word in edgewise. She should kick herself for messing with him…she’d had no idea how much she’d freaked him out.

Watching him stalk back and forth, she could practically hear the words tumbling around in his head as he tried to figure out what to hit her with next. She took a deep breath, let it out slowly, and tried to think of something to say that wouldn’t ignite either of their tempers and make things worse.

That wasn't what she'd come here for. She never dreamt he’d be so shaken.

Feeling pretty awful, she tried to take a stab at apologizing again.

Her voice, contrite and tentative, spoke softly, “Lee…” His head snapped around and the utter devastation on his face made her words trail off to nothing.

Lee had no idea what she was going to say…it didn’t really matter. She had no clue what losing her would've done to him.

None.

Then again, he'd never told her.

He made his way back to Kara and cupped her face with his hand. “Do not ever do that to me again.” Then he crushed her mouth under his since he didn’t know what else to say.

Okay…not what she expected. Shocked to her toes, Kara responded nonetheless.

Her tongue slid along his, while her brain spun out of control. She wasn’t sure if it was from the unexpectedly heated kiss, or the fact that Lee was coming at her full tilt with the gloves off.

Whatever the hell it was, she didn't back away from it this time. They’d danced around whatever the indefinable thing they had between them long enough. Kara let instinct take over and gave herself up to the moment.

Lee couldn’t believe she met him kiss for kiss. He wouldn't waste time wondering about it, though. Maneuvering Kara backwards, he never let up his relentless onslaught of her mouth as he worked their way toward the hatch. Most of the pilots would still be on the hangar deck celebrating the Blackbird, but he wasn’t going to take any chances. He might've started this on the spur of the moment but by the gods he planned to push it as far as he could.

He halted their progress just in front of the closed hatch and still kissing Kara, reached blindly for the scrap of rebar that would bar the outside world from interrupting them.

The clang of metal against metal jerked Kara back to reality making her drag herself away from Lee’s mouth to glance down at the dogged hatch. His lips dropped to her throat and heat flooded her as the realization dawned. They were moving into uncharted territory for them.

Needing a moment to wrap her head around the idea, she glanced back up to see naked want and stark determination on Lee’s face.

Moment over.

Grabbing his chin, Kara jerked his mouth up to hers while moving him two steps back. She didn’t know where this was going and she didn’t care at the moment. Getting Lee out of his clothing…that was what she wanted to focused on.

Moving her hands down, Kara grasped the hem of his tanks and yanked them up and over his head before tossing them toward the lockers. Then, holding his gaze, she stepped back as her fingers went to the waistband of her shorts and slid teasingly around the edges before pushing them down to her knees letting gravity take care of the rest.

Stepping over them, she met Lee in a tangle of lips and arms and legs. The explosion of passion had them both off kilter, grabbing onto each other, neither willing to let go. With Lee’s hands tangled in her hair, she used hers to remove their remaining items of clothing then gave up all thought.

Thinking was overrated anyway…especially during a moment like this.

Going solely on instinct, they made their way to the bunk without tripping over each other. Lee lifted Kara up and with her legs wrapped around him their lips tried to cover every bit of territory they could reach. He sat down on the edge of the berth then rolled them both onto the bed. Straightening out, they closed the gaps again as their hands traveled over each other’s skin getting to know the familiar in a very new way.

Lee used his body to communicate with Kara. His hands never stopped moving, caressing her skin only to follow with his lips whispering right behind them. He never got words right anyway.

It didn’t help that she never took him seriously unless he didn’t want her too. By showing her how he felt, maybe she’d get the message…losing her wasn’t an option for him. His fingers stroked in and out of her and along her clit and he thought he might be making his point. If her breathless panting was any indication, he was on the right track.

Kara’s skin tingled wherever it touched Lee’s. It created a heady sensation, one she hadn’t had for as long as she could remember. She felt like she was splintering apart and kept hearing ‘I thought I’d lost you,’ and ‘Don’t ever do that to me again’. Lee gave a damn about her. Not as a pilot, not just as a friend…he cared about her on a level far deeper than that. Lee's every touch drove the point home. It was more than she ever thought she deserved, but the way his body moved against hers convinced Kara to ignore the nasty voice in her head, to let go and just feel and hear what he told her without words.

Lee felt the shift when Kara stopped holding back. She let him in, connected with him body and mind. He felt her hands guide him into position, her legs shifting…one drifting over his hip to pull him close, the other falling sideways to give him room. Her lips burned a path along his neck then her teeth grazed over his chin.

Pulling his head back he looked down at her as she writhed beneath him. Hair fanned out over the pillow, her face was flushed, breathing shallow. Poised above her, he wanted to drive himself inside her, but instead he whispered her name.

“Kara.”

Her eyes opened, snapping to his and she knew instinctively what he needed. With a barely perceptible nod of her head she answered. “Now, Lee.” Then she wrapped her other leg around his waist pulling him inside her.

Sinking into Kara, Lee decided he was home. Easing almost all the way out, he figured he might never let her leave the bunk unless he was with her. This…she…they were what he needed to get through life.

He let her draw him back in, the pleasure building and he dropped his head to mold her mouth to his. Tongue slipping past her lips, he relished the exquisite taste of her and picked up his pace.

Kara couldn’t seem to get enough. Thrusting her tongue against Lee’s, her hands were on his back, feet pressing against his ass trying to draw him in deeper. Lee moved a hand to the curve of her behind, bringing her hips to meet his, bumping her clit against his cock, increasing the friction between them. Groaning his name, Kara edged closer to breaking.

The feel of Kara’s slick walls drawing him in again and again had Lee spiraling out of control. Gasping her name, he held her hips against his and she took over, grinding from side to side until the breath caught in her throat and she came hard, contracting around his cock pushing him right to the brink.

He let go of her, his hips pumping in rapid succession until he broke, head thrown back on a moan. Dropping his head to her shoulder he waited until they could both breathe again then gathered her against him and rolled to his side.

Keeping one arm around her, Lee trailed his hand down to rest at the small of her back, letting her know he wasn’t ready to let her go just yet. He waited until Kara had her hand tucked up under her chin before brushing a few strands of hair back off her face then he propped his own head up on his hand. There was so much he needed to say, but once again he didn’t know where to start.

Kara did it for him.

Tilting her chin up, she gave him a kiss that said ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘I love you’ all at the same time. The kiss he gave back was full of love and acceptance. When the embrace finally ended, both were in complete understanding…sometimes…words were overrated.
