We check if a book is rare two ways:
1) How many other libraries own it (of course, of the 30 records on OCLC's connexion database, only one is the one most schools select, so you have to wade through a ton of garbage to find it).
2) How much it goes for on bookfinder.com (of course, 90% of bookfinder is print-on-demand, which tells you nothing of the value of your book).

EDIT: Of course you, Mr. Book, would have not title/copyright page. That would be too wonderful.
