Today, I watched the first five episodes of Stargate: Atlantis for the first time. My observations so far are twofold.
1. I have mad love for Rodney McKay, in all his bitchy, uber-competent-but-only-when-it-counts glory. And he has a fluffy kitty back home! This counts for a lot.
2. As with SG1, I find myself significantly more interested in the on-base episodes than the exploration ones. It's funny because I would jump at a *job* like working with the Stargates for the exploration, the discovery.
Maybe it's that the on-base stuff is more likely to further the ongoing plot. Problems and people on Atlantis aren't going to go away at the end of the episode. The on-base stuff also gives us more opportunity for character development, or so I think.
It probably doesn't help that the people the team meets while exploring are inevitably either a) even more Regular Ol (Slightly Exotic) Human than the average one-shot character in classic Who, or b) The Enemy, like the Wraith. The Wraith, at least, are interesting, whereas we're not likely to see Ubiquitus Natives again, so I'm not easily moved to care about them.
For the record, I classify the episodes I saw as follows:
Pilot: Contains both, but is ultimately an on-base.
Hide and Seek: On-base
Thirty-Eight Minutes: On-base
Suspicion: On-base
Childhood's End looks to be an exploratory, and I've only watched a little of it so far. Here's hoping it proves my theories wrong when I get around to finishing it.
Meanwhile, I've finally got my hands on the Due South pilot. Mounties ftw!
