Political Stuff:
Surprises this weekend - Both Maria Shriver and my sister came out for Obama.
And then there was the news that nutjob Ann Coulter claims she’ll campaign for Hillary Clinton if McCain is nominated. McCain must have danced for joy over that announcement.
Also,
this is fun to play with. Weekend Movies:
Tristan and Isolde
Not as good as I expected, but not entirely awful. I think my main problem with this movie is that I found its Tristan unappealing in every way and there was no chemistry between him and Sophia Myles’s Isolde but there was plenty between her and Rufus Sewell’s Mark. Mark is also by far the more likeable character. Thus it was also impossible for me to buy into the romantic tragedy that is supposed to be the heart of this story. The fight scenes were pretty good, though. Nicely choreographed.
Ice Princess
I like this movie a lot - enough that I know I will buy it. I was already looking forward to it because I enjoyed Michelle Trachtenberg’s dancing in the Buffy musical, and besides ice skating and sparkly costumes and pretty music, it also has a fantastic cast (Miss Trachtenberg, Joan Cusack, Hayden Panatierre) and teenage characters that are more well developed and realistic than they usually are in teen romantic comedies. I loved that the science geek also wanted to be girly. But I think the most pleasant aspect for me was that the mean girl turned out to be not mean at all.
Just Like Heaven
This was a pleasant enough romantic dramedy with good performances by Reese Witherspoone and Mark Ruffalo. The best parts for me were the gardens and they’re not in it much. It has a nice plot about finding balance in life and not closing yourself off, and it doesn’t obnoxiously hit you over the head with it’s message. It’s a good movie for whiling away a Sunday afternoon.
Charlotte Gray
I should probably not have watched this late on Sunday night. It’s too long and serious and I was already sleepy and distracted. I did see most of it, and I think Cate Blanchette’s performance was very good. However, the movie seemed long and tedious and yet still gripping to me. It’s a little to complicated and the love story constantly threatens to drown out the fine story regarding difficult choices in extraordinary times and learning from mistakes. The title character does experience some excellent growth throughout the film, which is especially notable in a scene with the man she originally sets out to find. Billy Crudup’s good in this, though not quite as good as Ms. Blanchette. But overall the film is good but could have been much better had the love story been tossed to the side. I ended up wishing I had enjoyed it much more than I did.
Most disconcerting moment: Hearing Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) say “All kids are a pain in the ass.”
Weight Loss Update
1. Get Rich Slowly has a companion blog, which I created an LJ syndicated feed for,
Get Fit Slowly.
2. I was pretty good over the weekend. I allow myself 1 day off my diet every week, and Saturday was that day. I still ate well, but I had some of
these chips (they are lower in carbs and especially in sugar than most other chips, but are still partly potato chips) and dessert of fresh berries and yogurt.
3. I also cooked up several lean, low carb dishes to help get me through the week.
4. And I walked both Saturday and Sunday.
I do not own a scale and don’t believe in weighing, at least for myself. It tends to have a negative impact rather than a positive one, but I could tell my clothes were looser, and I felt better in general.
Superbowl:
I didn’t watch*, but congrats Giants fans and condolences Patriots fans.
*Of course I didn’t - the puppy bowl was on!
Horoscope
You face a day of some conflict, nevertheless the discord will prove quite useful. This is probably one of the best opportunities of recent weeks to become aware of some family matters that have been occurring behind your back for some time now. News about some past personal history may surprise you, and perhaps even upset you for a short time.
Yes, that actually is how my day is going.
And I cannot figure out why everyone wants to talk at me on and on and on and on today. STFU peoples! Gah!
