18 days until the Potterdammerung.

As the release of DH approaches, I find myself halfway wanting spoilers, but actually repelled by other people’s theories. This is kind of a new thing. It started with the Olberman article, which I read and which had me frothing and since then I find myself running about with my eyes closed and my hands over my hears singing lalalalala I don’t want to hear it! Okay, not literally of course. I am more drawn to spoilers than theories, mainly out of anxiety for my favorite character. I haven’t read any that I believe so far, but I will admit to y’all that I have looked for some, a little.

The one theory post I’ve read and really liked recently was this one by delylah.

Ahhh, the joys of north Texas weather!

One of my co-workers recently told me about a theory/old-wives-tale that if it rains on the first day of the month, it will rain for at least 14 more days that month. It rained yesterday. The two forecasts I’ve looked at this morning both show rain all week and high temperatures in the 80s. The 80s!!!

I remember what last year’s 4th of July week was like very well, because my sister came to visit for the 4th of July last year. It was dry as the desert and scorching hot. We were already well into the 100s by then. In fact it was so hot we could barely stand to be outside for more than a few minutes to get to the car. We went to a movie, and shopping rather than trying any outdoor activities.

I’ll gladly take 80s and raining over 100s and a drought. Unfortunately, however, there has been major flooding in some nearby counties. Parker County has been especially hard hit. And it looks like Wichita Falls (in Wichita County) and Gainesville (where I lived as a toddler, in Cooke County) also had evacuations and/or flooding. Cooke County had already had some major flooding and had been declared a disaster area (along with several others). And yet I still feel afraid to complain about all the rain because then the rain might stop for good.

Movies, Especially Scary Ones

No movies this weekend, so no movie reviews. I have 3 at home, but couldn’t get in the mood to watch them.

Instead, on Saturday D and I watched a marathon of episodes of A Haunting ... on Discovery and I managed to completely freak myself out. I didn’t used to scare easily, but I’m finding that as I grow older it takes less to scare me, and I don’t enjoy it quite as much as I used to. As a result, I’m having really mixed feelings about 1408. On the one hand John Cusack. On the other hand, it looks really, really scary. Close to home kinda scary. But it’s also got pretty good reviews and ... c’mon it’s John Cusack in a Stephen King-based horror movie. How can I possibly resist that?! Plus Cusack is looking better right now than he has in years. *sigh*

Charm School

Last night was the last episode of the crazy train wreck that was Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School. Usually I put discussion of something that aired that recently behind a cut tag, but I think there are only two of us who watched it so I’m not going to use one.

The show turned out to be very different from what I thought it would be. I guess I had higher expectations than I should have. Oh, I knew there would be plenty of skanky behavior and cat fights and general grossness. I fully expected all of that. I just also expected more of the girls to actually learn something useful and worthwhile.

While I was strongly supporting Leilene for the win, I feel okay with Saaphyri winning it. However, I also thing the last 15 minutes was as staged and scripted as possible and that all three of the finalists knew what was coming down. Becky seemed perfectly fine with not being in the final two. Leilene seemed perfectly fine with not winning and Saaphyri wasz so over the top dramatic (falling on her knees and shrieking her thanks to Jesus for $50,000 WTF?!) that there was no sponteneity to the moment.

I think the ending also proved that Leilene was not at all the dumb, flighty, weak, emotional girl she pretended to be. I think she’s a pretty good actress, at least considerably better than most of the other girls on the show (save maybe Courtney). I also think she ended up being the true winner, since she got an agent out of the deal, meaning a job, and all Saaphyri gets is some money - and not much of that.

Despite the scripted feel of the ending, and the fact that the entire show was a train wreck, I have to admit that all three girls’ speeches at the end were moving to me, and I actually cried a little during Leilene’s. I would have cried during Saaphyri’s, but I never believed she was actually homeless and I think any problems she had were mostly of her own making, so I didn’t have that much sympathy for her.

On a more shallow note, Saaphyri’s make up at the end made her look like she was nearing her 60s. And she needs to get those girls drastically reduced. Leilene, on the other hand, looked absolutely gorgeous.

I think I’ve heard they might be doing a second round of this. I would hope it would be more substantive, but hey, this is VH-1!

Speaking of, are any of you going to watch Rock of Love with Brett Michaels? It looks hilarious!

Here, I'll do a quickie poll on it:

Poll Are You Going to Watch Rock of Love?

Will wait to post about NFNS until Tuesday again and do a general food show post.

Here comes more rain! There's a big black tunderstorm cloud outside my window!
