RPG Searching and Recent Rants Around LJ
Okay, so. I've been thinking, which is always dangerous. But sometimes I can't keep myself from doing it.
Lately there's been a number of posts on FFrants and BRPS expressing frustration at failed attempts to find good (or even any) heterosexual fanfic and/or RPGs. I also see in the comments to those rants a lot of angry lashing out at the folks expressing their desire to find something other than slash/yaoi and a lot of STFU don't you dare not Lovelovelove slash. Frankly, it leaves me bewildered. I can understand slash fans not wanting to justify their liking slash. I don't think anyone needs to justify their preference for anything, really. Including slash. And including het. But I don't see expressing a desire for one thing as the same thing as asking for justification for or bashing another.
I went through a lot of that frustration looking for non-slash (and specifically canon-based) games in HP fandom this year. I found one that, in my opinion, qualified as both well-done and canon based (aftertheendrpg), which I am watching and enjoy. (Thanks again for the rec, tunxeh!) And that was it. And I looked in many places for several months.
My typical response to "Why is there no #####!!!!!" whines is to say, "If you want it and it doesn't seem to exist, you should quit bitching and create it." And I've hit the point where I think enough people other than myself want it. So, if I create a HetRPGsearch comm, is that going to be considered wanky? I'd state "no gay bashing" in the user info, and make it clear that het friendly games that also allow slash could be promoted on it, and probably say I'd give triple gold stars to comms that focus on canon-compliant ships, as well, since it'd be my comm and I wave the canon-compliant ship banner. It wouldn't be anti-slash/yaoi, just pro-het (and probably pro-gen, as well).
