Serenity Review

Disclaimer and Warning: I am not a Firefly fan. I did watch a couple of episodes, at least partially, to see what my friends were talking about. Watching those episodes did not make me want to watch more of those episodes. I do not like sci-fi. There are specific things about the genre, in general, that I do not like1. Also, my take on the ( Read more... )

Okay after thinking over all you said at the showing here, seeing it again, and the poster...I have to say the Mal River thing makes even more sense. Inara will always be a whore in his eyes. As I told you I don't believe a man who calls you a whore when he is just [supposely] attracted to you will see you are anything but a whore when he beds you. Even if she never had another client the past would be there and sooner or later he'd get pissed over something and call her whore again ( ... )

I want to go see it again, right now. First things first -- y'all did actually go see it yesterday, right? I wasn't sure of the extent to which your plans had changed. The really sad thing is, I was not busy yesterday and M was gone most of the day, so I probably could have taken off early in the afternoon and gone with you. But instead I have more money, so I guess that is okay ( ... )

Yes, I did see it yesterday. Tonya went with me but Jamie never showed up. I'm just ready to go again.

Heh. Funny, because I was just agreeing with the statement in someone else's post about how the Simon/Mal was so much more blatant in the movie than in the series - their opening arguing sequences were pretty scorching, if you ask me. I never really got into the pairing during the show, but I think the movie may have convinced me. But I also wonder what you'd think of the Simon in the series. Though I suppose there's not much getting around the reaction you have to him physically, so it may not change.

As for Mal/Inara, I've never thought they actually could work. They may have sexual tension, but them getting together would be the worst idea ever. But it also ties into my problems with the way Inara is written, and how Joss sometimes writes "strong women" who turn out to be quite different than what he thinks they are.

I loved the stuff in the series where he talked about Simon being lily white 'all' over. And the up and down he did when he first met Simon.

Haha. See, I've yet to really notice it in the series, which is odd because my slash goggles are attached pretty permanently. Something about this show doesn't make me lean toward slashing anyone, though, so that may be why.

Heh ... I don't think I'd like the Simon in the series, to tell you the truth. Yes because there's no getting around the physical reaction, but also because I think he's a sanctimonious prick, and very priggish, and reminds me of a cross between Percy Weasley and Jonathan Kent. (Sorry for the scary image!)Because of that, I couldn't slash him with anyone if my life depended on it. However, I completely respect everyone else's right to do so if they wish. The arguing at the beginning came of to me as just arguing, and maybe as a side issue to add tension to the Mal/River dynamic.

Totally agree with you re: Mal/Inara and Joss' "strong women." I sometimes think he gets a little confused, there. *g*

I totally expect Mal/Inara as a canon pairing. Yes, it's a bad idea, but that's par for the relationship course in Joss's realities.

Buffy/Angel, Spike, Riley
Xander/Cordy and Anya
Willow/Oz and Tara
Giles/Jenny

When it's a good match, one of them has to die tragically. It's like Joss doesn't believe that it's possible to be married happily for 50 or 60 years.

I can't tell if Mal's prickly to keep himself isolated and protect his vulnerable underbelly, or if he's prickly to throw his heartless exterior into sharper relief. And that's a huge problem for me. If it's the soft underbelly thing, that'd be great, but I honestly cannot tell. Mostly I just sit around wishing someone would head-butt him.

Oh, and re: the dialect, someone (can't remember who) opined that it had something to do with Chinese. I don't see that at all. Chinese has no articles or tenses (or, indeed, no inflections of any kind).
