Star Trek

Possible slight spoilers for those who haven't seen the new Star Trek
I saw the new Star Trek last thursday night. I enjoyed the film, and am glad Trek is back, even though it's an alternate universe now. (Though many things in the film made it seem as though it was always an alternate universe, even before the Narada destroyed the Kelvin...though some could possily argue that the ripples would go both forwards and backwards, as we were shown characters from later dates than the destruction of the Kelvin, going back in time and creating a change, so those wouldn't have happened now and the influence they had would never have been exerted...timey-wimey...)

I only caught TOS in reruns on the CBC, though I was a fan of the series. My favorite character was Spock, and my biggest concern going into this film was Zachary Quinto as Spock. I'm not really a fan of Sylar on Heroes, and I'm convinced that it's not just because of the way the character is written, but also how Quinto chooses to portray him.  I did enjoy his Spock and look forward to seeing more of him.  Speaking of Spock, I loved Nimoy. I have to admit that when Spock Prime first meets Kirk and says "I am and always will be your friend", I teared up a little.

With a reset like this, there is always the concern that the characters will come across as caricatures or poor imitations. I think the film and cast did a good job of capturing and presenting the spirit of the characters for the most part. Kudos go out especially to Karl Urban. He nailed Bones.

Apart from being a good Trek film, I think the movie comes across as a good film, and new fans will be able to enjoy it. I tremendously enjoyed the jokes and shoutouts that only Trek fans would get, and appreciated that they were done in a way that didn't deter non Trek fans from enjoying the film.

I'll probably be going to see the film again, and I will definitely be purchasing the dvd, as it is clear material was cut for time.

I look forward to the next installment!
