Finally getting around to it

The weather goes from dumping anywhere between six to nineteen inches of snow or being below zero which has really given me time for reading.

It gave me the time read a book I've always meant to, The Life and Death of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs. The book is of course dated, and Jacobs can certainly ride a hobby horse; but there is still something real and true about it. Maybe it's because I really, really have come to hate cars. I admit to having one, but I'm tired of going past far too much good land paved over.

Madison is too small to be one of her great cities, but I do think she'd approve of my neighborhood with small houses and apartment buildings, factories (I live by an ice cream factory!) and grocery stores and restaurants. It really is a neighborhood built around walking and taking the bus. If it wasn't for the need to haul the dog around, I give up my car and just sign up for a Community Car.

And on a shallow note, I do like the Modern Libraries smaller format. It just seems to fit the hand and get shoved into a bag easier.
