Prompt: "Why would I want that?"
Story: Arrendale Heights
Word Count: 588
Notes: I feel like I've written this scene before (and better), but I don't see any notes for it, so it must have been just in my head. I think also when I wrote this I thought the prompt was "why would I want to do that?" so I hope it still works. I may have stretched it a little bit here.
After Maura took off after Jeremy, Vince and Judith were left on their own. As Judith stared forward, eyes glued to the stage, Vince buried his hands in his pockets and stared at his shoes. He felt like he should say something, but he wasn't sure what.
"I hope you're not too disappointed about David."
Judith scoffed. "I'm really not."
"I've always thought he was kind of a jerk. You can do way better."
"Thanks," Judith stammered, embarrassed. A moment of silence passed before she spoke again. "I never really liked him anyway," she confessed. "I just made it up to have something to talk about while Maura and Meghan were going on and on about their crushes."
Vince laughed loudly and clapped Judith on her shoulder. He could see his reaction startled her and was quick to apologize. "I'm sorry."
Judith rolled her eyes. "It was stupid, I know."
"I know what your mistake was," Vince said a moment later, in all seriousness. "Next time you've got to make sure the guy is on the plan first."
"There's not going to be a next time."
"Too bad," Vince said thoughtfully. "If you were to change your mind and really wanted to give the girls something to talk about, I could be your fake boyfriend."
Judith turned to him astonished. She wasn't sure how to respond to that offer.
"Just think about it. A pretend relationship could work out for both of us."
"Why would I want that?" Judith blurted out. "More importantly, why would you want that?"
"Well, first of all, you know Maura and them like to talk the talk, but none of them have ever actually had a boyfriend. It's all talk. If you even had a fake relationship, that would put you way beyond what they've actually experienced and they'd have nothing to say."
"Except they would be probing me for details that I'd have to make up."
"You were making stuff up anyway, right? And sharing the details is what's going to help me."
"How so?"
"There's this girl I'm interested in, but she won't give me the time of day. Maybe if she saw that a quality girl like you would go for me and had nice things to say about me, maybe she'd see that I'm not such a bad guy."
"Quality girl?" Judith asked, confused.
"Yeah, of course. You're a smart girl, a good person and after seeing how you handled David's moves in art class, it's clear you don't take crap from a guy and you wouldn't be the type to take any from me either. I want her to see that I'm a good guy and that I know how to treat a girl right."
"But how is she going to know? Who is she anyway?"
"Doesn't matter," he shrugged off the second question. "Just talk to Maura and your other friends and word will get around. What do you say?"
"I say this is crazy," Judith said rolling her eyes, yet she couldn't help thinking how great it would be to turn the tables on Maura for once. She had spent the last few years listening to Maura go on and on about how hot her brother Jeremy was. She wondered how her best friend would feel hearing about how great of a boyfriend her own brother was. Just for once it would be interesting to see what it would be like if their roles were reversed. "I can't believe I'm doing this, but okay, I'm in."
