Jolene stared in awe as they walked up to what had only last week been the neighborhood park, but had since been transformed into a wonderland of autumn delights. As the children skipped ahead excitedly, even the perpetually sullen Lance, she slowed her steps to take in all of the sights and sounds and smells of the annual carnival. Booths were lined up right and left, lit up with festive lights, and sending out cheerful tunes to lure visitors to try their hands at winning a prize at one of the games. The sweet and spicy smells of apple cider, fruit cobbler, and pumpkin spice everything were drawing her towards the food stands and were making her mouth water. In between the stands, bales of straw, pumpkins, and scarecrows lent to the fall theme. In Jolene's eyes, the entire scene was simply magical.
She turned to Lawrence, who was still walking beside her, though the children had long run off. She was surprised that he seemed engrossed with watching her take it all in.
"This is wonderful! You really do this every year?"
"It's become a neighborhood tradition."
"And it's to raise money for charity?"
Lawrence nodded. "It was Eileen's idea initially. Fall, especially Halloween, was her favorite time of year. Unfortunately, she never got to see the results of her planning. The ladies in the neighborhood have been diligent about keeping it going in her honor."
"She must have been a wonderful woman. I can tell she had so many friends here, even still. And I'm glad the tradition has been kept alive. I love the fall too."
As she looked about her excitedly, Lawrence watched her with a sad half smile that made her heart melt. She quickly checked herself. She wasn't going to get involved, but it was increasingly easy for her to see how a woman could fall for him.
This was going to be harder than she thought.
