Favorite actors..... (rather stream of consciousness)

Was watching Jared do one of the "Dallas Buyers Club" interviews from TIFF. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbGsEyE5UXc ) The interviewer, Sasha -- who strangely enough I know as a private chef from "Private Chefs of Beverly Hills" on the Food Network -- was clearly a MSCL fangirl. Several times she brought up how she missed Jared's acting.

How do I say this? How can you miss an actor who does independent movies like Jared does, doesn't do many movies, and tries to keep his private life private?

Pretend for a moment that instead of Mars, Jared decided to be a recluse painter. Totally off the grid. Now compare his two careers and this fictitious third.

With Mars, if Jared doesn't check in with us on Twitter on a near daily basis, we'd be ready to send out the National Guard. (Witness the stupid "lets all quit twitter" stunt before LLFD.) If Jared had stuck with acting and nothing else, or acting and a less public career, would you really "see" him that often? Yes, he would have taken a few more movies, but I don't see him choosing to act often enough that he's always in the theatre with one movie or another.

And, as he mentioned here, he doesn't dwell on acting projects once he's finished with them. So you'd get a movie and a burst of promo. Then what? Catching him at Fashion Week, on the streets of NY, at an art gallery, or an upscale party. That's nothing.

God, if he did that it would almost feel -- to the Echelon -- like he decided to be that recluse painter.

Because they're primarily a live band -- again, Jared's words -- nothing is finished. The songs evolve and change during the live shows. Though the focus is always the current record, the current video, the current tour, it's all Mars. It's all one continuous story.

Jared's acting, on the other hand, was never any sort of continuous path. There are elements that his movies share, but it's not like an actor who does a tv series or a series of movies that are all linked (like the Star Wars trilogy). They're all self-contained independent projects. (Ignore MSCL for the moment, we're talking his career as a whole.)

Before Jared, any actor I would put up as "a favorite" was either a (long running) tv series actor, a movie "series" actor, or an actor who basically was typecast into the same role movie after movie.

I appreciate Jared's acting career, love some of his individual movies, but he'd be no where near as important to me without Mars, without being exposed to Jared as an individual on a regular basis.

If you were foolish enough to follow his acting career and ignore his music career, what's the glue? The fangirl-ing "he's hot"? The "he acted in my favorite movie, so anything he does I'm up for"?

Jared's movies aren't a 7 course meal, they're an a la carte selection that don't go together necessarily.

Or am I describing the introvert's version of a favorite actor vs an extrovert's version?

With books, movies, tv series, music, I'm a long story sort of girl. I prefer long book series, long running tv series, and musicians that are more than a flash in the pan. Is that the literary/entertainment equivalent of a long, deep ongoing friendship versus casual friends that flit in and out of your life?

Huh? For that matter, my reading/movie choices. My favorites are the deep and probing types. Music too. I don't like my entertainment to be "small talk" any more than I like my interactions with friends to be dominated with "small talk".

For reference, excluding Jared's movies for the moment, my two favorites are "Contact" and "Gattaca". My favorite tv series (that are currently airing) are "Person of Interest" and "Dexter". (There's one more Dexter left, it counts. *g*) Nothing light or casual there.

I'm not saying everything I watch, read, or listen to is deep and meaningful. I watch a soap opera (General Hospital) and enjoy Stephanie Plum novels. Not deep, but certainly long and continuing.

Strange. Never pegged my "entertainment" interests so closely to being an introvert.

So back to Jared and the acting question.

Jared's quote "How can you miss us if we never go away?" pops into my head.

But what about the opposite. How can you miss someone if you never build a relationship with them? The relationship Jared has built with us is through the music. He doesn't offer that in his acting career.

While we're connecting personality types with Jared's careers. Jared likes closure with the movies, but Mars is completely open ended. He doesn't even like to call an album, a video, or a project like Artifact "finished". Definitely a Judging (over a Perceiving) type, though. Bart and his inner control freak. *g*

It's been a while since I tried to peg Jared with Myers-Briggs. But would that make him the same type as me? INFJ? (Introvert iNtuitive Feeling Judging ... with the opposing characteristics being Extrovert Sensor Thinking Perceiving). Hmmm.
