Oct 11, 2004 13:06

This is kinda a continuation of this entry.

The question was posted on bookloversgroup.

What did you think of the quantity of sex in the book? Did the scenes take away from the plot or add to it?

I agree that these were not gratuitous sex scenes. (Of course, you're preaching to the choir.) Each one advanced the plot. Those that continued to be offended by Anita, Byron and Requiem or Nathaniel and Anita, genuinely do not get the point. I read one comment today that echoed what Jessica Arnet was saying - Anita had taken advantage of a child. Um, no. We have seen Nathaniel as a child because Anita wasn't ready to look at Nathaniel in any other light. But she wanted him from the beginning. Partially because of Raina. Then that changed. But she thought he was broken. That she needed to fix him. Only to discover that he'd been as careful of her as she had been of him. Of not letting her see to much of the adult in him because he grew up so harshly.

7 has become one of my favorite scenes because I think it shows much about Requiem's character and how he so quickly because Jean-Claude's number 3. Anita would have accepted Graham's kiss and intercourse with Requiem because she's trying to be more practical but Requiem has already recognized that she isn't casual with her body, no matter what the ardeur has required. His comment to Graham, "She isn't mine to share." was very telling. I like him best of the new characters we've met.

I like 11 more and more, though it isn't what flat does it for me. *grin* But I think that it does show Anita feeling safe, safe enough to know that it was Nathaniel behind her, not merely a leopardman. That they wouldn't hurt her, that being a shifter is definitely not the same as being an animal. It was a very well done scene.

13 is also a favorite scene. Micah, though he loves Anita, knows that she doesn't feel exactly the same way. And while he's willing to do almost anything to keep her by his side, he has his insecurities. Feeding the ardeur as they did, something that should not have been possible unless they were a true mated pair, made Micah feel more secure. Making love without the ardeur made him feel loved.

Of course someone else on the list agreed that ID didn't have gratuitous sex scenes, but thought that CS did. *sigh* There weren't a lot of sex scenes in CS, were there? All I remember off the top of my head is the ménage à trois with Anita/JC/Asher and Anita/Jason and the almost sex scene with Anita/Jean-Claude that got interrupted when Anita's cross flared around Asher. Was there another Anita/JC scene or one with Anita/Micah? Nate was too weak to feed on. If it's just those three, I would argue that they are also all instrumental to advancing the plot. But, yeah, preaching to the choir. *g*

I agree with you about Requiem. His actions in the jeep make me feel like he's a character we can really trust. That and the fact that Jean-Claude made him his third after only a few weeks in St. Louis. I wonder how long they knew each other at court.

Wicked and Truth are just as compelling as Requiem, but in the opposite way. While Requiem feels like someone in the inner circle we can trust, Wicked and Truth feel like they are ones to keep an eye on.

I was thinking about the scene with Nate and Jason, I think the part before they shifted is just as important as the furry issue. I think Jason said something to the effect of let go, we'll catch you. Releasing control is a big issue with Anita.

I wonder if we'll see the first full moon with the leopards hunting with the wolves. I'm wondering how the Richard/Anita/Micah dynamic will work. She's part of a mated pair with each man. Richard says he's ready to share, but is he really?
