SCO summit in Yekaterinburg. Activists imprisoned, ombudswoman thanks the police

During the SCO summit in Yekaterinburg human rights activists Vyacheslav Bashkov and Gleb Edelev were imprisoned for three days. The pretext was allegedly disobeying the lawful request of the police.

It started with the car of Bashkov, in which the activists were going to meeting against the abuse of human rights of the authorities, they were stopped by traffic police without explanation. A head of the police soon arrived in the scene and stated that the Bashkov's machine is listed in the hijacking. Despite the fact that Bashkov presented all the documents, the police demanded him to go to the police station. Bashkov did not mind, but asked that his driver's licensehe should be returned before going to police station, without which he can not drive a car. Police officers also demanded Bashkov to sit behind the wheel without a license.

At that moment police had not any questions to passengers - Gleb Edelev and Vladimir Shaklein. Seeing that the case is delayed, Shaklein went to the meeting on foot. At this moment no one of the several police officers did not pay any attention. (Later, police "witnesses" claimed that 72-year-old Shaklein "run away" from them).

Edelev could easily get away with Shaklein. But he stayed with Bashkov, because he saw that some sot of provocation is plotted against Bashkov. In the end, Bashkov agreed to go without rights. Edelev voluntarily went with him to the police station.

At the Kirov district police station Edelev's recorder and Bashkov's cell phone, which were used to record tlks with the police, were taken away by force. All records have been erased by police. However Bashkov had a hidden videocamera, and everything was videotaped. (Several extracts from this video are exhibited in a LiveJournal blog «Ural_politiks»).

After detaining activists for 5 hours at the police station, the police fabricated protocols of both activist's disobedience to the police officers, i.e. Bashkov and Edelev refused ostensibly to go to the police station.

Magistrate Tatyana Chirkova, examined the case of Bashkov and Edelev the same day of their detention, she refused to prepare evidence from videotape. Apparently, she knew that the evidence refuted the false police reports. As a result, Edelev and Bashkov were sentenced for three days of arrest.

Arrest of human rights activists caused a storm of indignation in the Web and media. Numerous citizens addressed to all authorities, including to the Sverdlovsk Ombudswoman T.G.Merzlyakova with the requirement to protect human rights activists.

However Tatiana proudly kept silent. But at a recent meeting in the police department of the Sverdlovsk region she finally burst with admission. Web newspaper «JustMedia» wrote on June 24, 2009:

"The Commissioner for Human Rights thanked in her statement, first of all, the Sverdlovsk police forces for public security during the preparation and holding of summits of the SCO and BRIC summits.

"The human rights community of the Middle Urals predicted impairment of human rights at the time of summits, I am very happy that these predictions did not become a reality.
Police worked perfectly. ... We are in a situation of persecution of the police, when one particular manifestation of the hysterical media is extrapolated to the entire system of organs of internal affairs, and I consider it my duty to defend the honor and dignity of the police staff themselves from unfair attacks».

So here, dear policeman. You can arrange any provocation against human rights activists. The Ombudswoman will support you, to protect you from the hysterical attacks on the media, to protect your honor and dignity.
