TV

I don't really like to talk about television that much. Until about four years ago, I barely watched TV at all, and have, for the most part, had a pretty low opinion about the entertainment value and the general quality of TV shows. The main thing that has made the difference, I think, was when Ray bought a TiVo, suddenly making it possible to watch specific shows without having to pay too much attention to schedules or commercials. All of the sudden, I had a way to waste an hour, when I was stressed out or tired or just needing to kill some time, without having to channel surf or be inundated by advertisements.

So, at this point, I have a handful of TV shows that have met my approval, and I've even come to love. The list is still pretty short, ie: House, Mash, the first four seasons of The West Wing, and Gray's Anatomy are pretty much it. There are other shows that I'll watch and enjoy, but those four are the only ones I really care about (though I thoroughly expect to add Studio 60 to that list because it looks like I won't have to live without Josh Lyman for the rest of my life).

The reason for this post though, is because I just got, and am listening to, the soundtrack from Gray's Anatomy, and it is fantastic. One of the best things about some of these TV shows I love is the music, and the way the music can bring you back to the story and the emotions the story made you feel. It's a form of art I'd never really considered before recently (I think it was the soundtrack from Garden State that made it first occur to me); the matching of popular music and story to make a musical story that parallels the story told in pictures and words. It's an art form that I don't believe I will ever be able to master, and that makes me respect it even more.
