Throughout the past four years, I have immersed myself in various activities. Each has contributed to my well-rounded, genuine character and compelled my passion for learning and leading. As well, my commitment to justice and fairness in our world and nation inspire my morals and ethics.
In all of my experience, I have learned much about diversity and the compassion necessary for it in society. In Scouting, my Eagle project included leading the construction of a prayer and spiritual garden at the Presbyterian University Center, a campus ministry and religious organization at Florida State University. The most important lesson I learned through this project and Scouting in general taught me to interact cooperatively with others and respect my peers. Compassion and cooperation were instrumental in this work- and in our world as well. Living in the SJLLC will give me tools to contribute to its worthwhile goals toward a more compassionate society, while also broadening my personal experience.
In addition, environmental stewardship plays a large role in my life. Whether it be reducing greenhouse emissions, researching more sustainable agriculture, or even practicing and teaching basic subsistence gardening, I like activities related to a cleaner planet. In my service, I hope to advocate environmental and care for the earth, our home.
As an SJLLC participant, I want to live and serve with others to gain knowledge in a community of caring people. Through exposure to others’ rich and diverse ideas, this special community will expand my mind as well as enrich my life. Overall, I expect the SJLLC community to be a rewarding setting in which I hope to give and to receive.
Such a living-learning community will expose me to new, creative ways to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with others. In my experience, I have sought to correct social injustice and help the forgotten. Three trips to assist in hurricane Katrina relief in Mississippi demonstrate this effort. I will continue working in ways like this to improve peoples’ lives and believe that the SJLLC will enable me to pursue this work further.
In conclusion, I will contribute positively to the SJLLC community through use of my experience, interest, and commitment to sew the seeds of social justice in and for future generations.
