Today had some interesting events that I would not normally imagine myself doing. The first was going to a talk by a visiting professor. I generally consider those talks way too specific to be interesting, but a) Mackey was vouching for the speaker, and b) the speaker, Noam Elkies from Harvard, was talking about mathematics present in musical canons. It was totally worth going, in the end.
Also, I got a $5 ticket to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, so I went to that too. This was my first time at an orchestra, or at least the first time in a long while. It was a bit difficult for me to focus during the performance, so my eyes would drift, but I was still listening to the music quite clearly. It was a really good performance, and especially the violin soloist was stellar. I believe her name was Chee-Yun; I mostly recall thinking during her pieces, "Wow, this is really showing what the limits of the violin are as an instrument."
That's about it. I just got back, and I'm not usually too good at describing these things in the blog.
