If it makes you feel any better, I don't think I could afford to buy anything more than a shack around here, either, and it would probably end up being in West Virginia or farther out. Hence, I rent. But this is an area that has interesting jobs at good salaries, and I don't think I'd be happy in Pittsburgh or other places where I might be able to afford property, so it's all a balancing act. While renting may be kinda like throwing my money into a hole, I can still afford to live comfortably and put money away into savings, so I figure I can wait a while on the owning property thing.

You make a good point. Renting some place that makes you happy is worth far more than owning some place that doesn't. I imagine a number of us will be renting until we can pull together a two income household.

And, renting is good for as long as you aren't sure where you want to be. Buying and selling property is time consuming and stressful, so you don't want to do it too often.

Quite true. The big thing on my mind lately is that I'm tired of feeling like a nomad. I've been moving back and forth across the country for 23 years and I ready to stop, just not in NJ.

You really have to go where your heart (and employment) take you, but for what it's worth I have a strong personal bias for this area. I don't know if it's for you, but I think it's worth spending some time here and staying if it's a match.
