Ada Lovelace day post: Hypatia

In honour of Ada Lovelace day, here's some words about an early mathematician.

Hypatia was a mathematics teacher in Alexandria in 400 AD. With one of her students, she invented the plane astrolabe (an ancient navigational instrument, forerunner of the sextant), the graduated brass hydrometer (a device that measured the specific gravity of liquids) and a hydroscope (a long tube fitted with lenses so objects lyingat the bottom can be reflected on a screen on the deck of the ship that carries it).

Hypatia was murdered by a group of Christian monks in 415 AD.
