"We're just going to go have fun and play the game, that's it. If we go play hard and the thing doesn't come like it's supposed to come, we'll move on. We'll come next year. Why should we panic? We've got a great team. If it doesn't happen, good. We'll come next year and try to do it again. We're confident every day. It doesn't matter how things go for you. We're not going to give up. We're just going to go and play the game, like I've said, and move on. If it doesn't happen, so who cares? There's always next year. It's not like the end of the world or something."
I really don't care about the red sox, and i don't follow baseball close enough beyond the giants to know anything about manny, and i've only read this quote ... so maybe i'm missing something... but isn't this exactly the sort of thing we want sports to be about? Isn't this exactly what everyone wants little league coaches to tell their players? For once an athlete isn't so focused on winning and on competition that he sets a hyper masculine/voilent/end over means/bad example for the young fans.
Maybe he's a little nonchalant, certainly tired after over 170 games since april... but saying that all you can do is try your best, have fun, and not worry about the outcome... what the big deal? baseball is a game and, like everything we do, too much attachment to the outcome causes misery.
but i agree, i hate how sports news crucifies some people and inexplicably loves others.
