I'm So Damn Proud of My President!/ "Oath Flubgate"

A mere 48 hours in and he's already done more than Bush had in his eight years.   To actually hear things like the Consitution and the Geneva Conventions acknowledged...wow. Haven't heard that in a long while.   He's really hitting the ground running, so to speak, and I am so proud of him!  Feels so good to have a real President again...

President Barack Obama today signed a round of executive orders demanding the closing of the U.S.-run detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within a year, and new rules for the conduct of interrogation of suspected terrorists.

"The message that we are sending around the world is that the United States intends to prosecute the ongoing struggle against violence and terrorism,'' Obama said at the order-signings in the Oval Office, "and we are going to do so vigilantly, we are going to do so effectively, and we are going to do so in a manner that is consistent with our values and ideals.''

Restating a commitment that he made during his inaugural address this week, the new president said: "We are not... going to continue with a false choice between our safety and our ideals... It is precisely our ideals that give us the strength and the moral high ground to deal with the... violence'' of terrorism.

"We intend to win this fight,'' Obama said. "We intend to win it on our terms.''

"Today is a great day for the rule of law in the United States of America.,'' said Senate Foreign Relations Chairman John Kerry (D-Mass.) "A detention facility where individuals have been held for more than seven years without charge is contrary to the most basic principles of American justice. It has done incalculable damage to our reputation for equitable justice....

"The world is watching,'' Kerry said, "and today President Barack Obama sent a clear message to people everywhere: America is ready to lead again--not just with our words, but by our example."

(I, of course, completely concur with Senator/Chairman Kerry, another great American leader and my other favorite Democrat :))

On another note, I'm rather annoyed by this whole Roberts oath flub thing, increasingly so the more I hear about it. Maybe it's overly cynical or even paranoid of me, but I can't help but to suspect that it was one final middle finger by the powers that were, who were undoubtedly not pleased with his election. I mean, the guy is a justice on the friggin' Supreme Court and he can't even get something like 7 lines that 6th graders learn in Social Studies right? C'mon! I honestly don't remember this happening before, the new President having to take his oath, twice (They did it again at the WH yesterday). Even though it technically, legally, didn't matter (as Keith said on his show last night, the new President becomes such at twelve noon on January 20, whether he's reciting the oath or taking a bath (lol..)), but it's just the principal of it, you know?  Ah well, guess it doesn't matter now! :D

Anyway,  I know it's been "Obamamania" here on this space lately, lol, and although I doubt this journal will ever stop (nor should it..What else can I say? I'm a certified political junkie! :p) being a template for my political views and musings, there will be other, unrelated/personal posts again in the near future. Stay tuned! ;)
