This is something I wrote from 2009 until the end of 2010. SO it might be weird. Im not looking for anything, just posting cause no ones read my stuff in a while.
Might be called: Lightning and Thunder.
The Young Ones
Something involving youth and confusion.
Here is chapter one.
Chapter One: Who Needs Them?
The first thing Ted thought about that morning when he woke up was, Becca. What was she doing today? He brown hair in the sun and that dress she wore when they first met. Was she thinking of him too? Was she getting up in the morning wishing they were still together?
He wasn’t even sure if he ever wanted to see her again. That didn’t mean he didn’t still have feelings for her. She sent him a text message break up three days ago and the shock was just starting to wear off now. Josh said he was lying to himself. He was starting to think that maybe he was. Maybe he was pretending to be sadder about it then he was. She treated him like shit most of the time anyways.
He got out of bed and got dressed deciding to forget all of that other bullshit. It wasn’t that hard to forget about her anyways since it was the first day of the new semester. He welcomed the distraction even though his community college was his least favorite place in the world. He threw on dirty jeans he found on his floor and a random white tshirt. He sat on his bed tying his old beat up sneakers. His cell phone in his pocket started to ring. He rolled his eyes when he saw ‘Kate’ across the screen.
“Hello?” He said into his phone.
“Roosevelt, where the fuck are you?” She yelled and he couldn’t help but laugh.
“Relax, I’m leaving now.” He grabbed his keys from the table.
“Hurry please, you know my class starts before yours does.
“You know this is community college right? You can take it down a notch.” He said as he walked down his stairs and out his front door to his car.
“You’re lucky I love you.” She said hanging up on him. As he started his minivan he couldn’t help but think about what a beautiful day it was. Everything had a nice yellow glow. He wish it could always stay like this. He drove down his South Buffalo street towards Kate’s house. Almost everyone who lived there grew up together in some way. The people who lived there were mostly from old Irish families who immigrated there when the city started. It was a small city and call the kids knew each other. Like Ted and Kate. He had known her since he was five years old, the first day of kindergarden. That was also the day he met Josh too.
All the houses were close together, and every one of them had a small block of grass in front of it and its own tree. But a lot of the trees had been cut down a few years ago after a bad snow storm. The city was known for its snowstorms. But the people who lived there felt it was so much more than that. An under rated city, that was dying from lack of jobs and growth.
Kate sat on her front porch, waiting. Ted could see her reading a book with her hair in her face. She didn’t even notice when he pulled up, so he honked his horn. She rushed to the passenger door.
“My turn for music!” She said greeting him.
“Oh great.” He groaned as she dug through her purse looking for a cd. Ted pulled out of the drive way and headed towards the school. He ran his fingers through his short thick blonde hair. He wished he hadn’t gotten out of bed that morning.
“I got it.” She said, ejecting his cd and putting in hers.
“Perfect.” He said with a sigh when MGMT started playing in the van. They were quiet for a long time. Ted turned up the volume for the first couple of songs. He thought about their first day of first grade when Kate tried to kiss him. They were just kids back then. Sometimes Ted felt like no time had passed at all.
“Ted? Hello? You all right?’ She asked him. He ran his fingers through his hair again.
“I think I’m going to give up women.” He said. Kate burst into laughter. “Fuck if I ever tell you anything.”
“I’m sorry, Teddy.” She said “But you have a new every few weeks. You’re almost as bad as Josh.”
“Not this time. Becca dumped me.”
“So?”
“So, I really liked Becca. She was funny, and smart, beautiful…”
“Are we talking about the same Becca?” She asked sarcastically. “You’ll get over her eventually.” Ted didn’t say anything as they pulled into the long parking lot. Meg worried about her friend. She watched him as he drove wondering if he was okay or if this Becca thing was really bothering him. He parked the van in a spot.
“Are you all right?” She asked him.
“Yes, I’m fine.” He said quickly. “You better get going, you’re class is starting, and Josh is here.” He nodded towards the window in front of him and Kate looked in the direction. She saw Josh walking towards them, He was tall and thin, his bushy brown hair was bouncing in the breeze. He was wearing tight dark jeans and a white shirt. Slightly more put together then Ted. He looked tan from the summer sun.
“Good morning Katelyn.” He said opening the door for her.
“Good morning Josh.” She said “I’ll see you boys later.” She said, leaving them. As she walked towards the school she could hear them yelling to her, but she couldn’t understand them. She just waved and kept walking to her class. She wasn’t necessarily excited for school. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do with school, but she was almost done in community college and she wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. She was just a few minutes early when she walked into her class and found a seat in the back. She sat next to a boy with broad shoulders, dark hair, and dark eyebrows. He was tall and dressed casually. He looked familiar to her.
“Hey,” He leaned in. “Do I know you?”
“I’m not sure.” She paused. “Maybe we had a class together?”
“English 101? Professor Tomoni?”
“No, don’t think so.” She said. He shrugged when the teacher walked in and class started.
“I’m Kate.” She said. He grinned at her, and said.
“I’m Roger.”
Ted took a long drag from the joint and blew the smoke out the window. He handed it back to Josh without looking at him.
“There’s still time to skip.”
“Skip on the first day starts a habit.” Josh said as he exhaled. Ted watched a car pull into the spot next to him. It was two girls. One looked like a lesbian. She had short dark brown hair, and she dressed like a dude. The other girl was in the passenger seat and he couldn’t see much of her besides her body. Just jeans and a black strokes t shirt that looked ten years old. The lesbian glared at him, and he just grinned and nodded at her.
“Kate looked cute today.” Josh said. “Why does she always gotta wear dresses?”
“I didn’t even notice she was wearing a dress.” Ted said turning to him.
“You’re an asshole.”
“Really? I’m the asshole?” Ted said, taking the tiny roach from him and hitting it. “Let’s go.”
Ted didn’t realize how stoned he was until after he got inside. He hadn’t been back at his Community College in months, and the first time he was, he was this out of it. He blindly followed Josh to their class, trusting his judgment in getting there and finding a seat at a table. He sat down and was face to face with the lesbian and her friend. He knew it was her because of the Strokes shirt, but now he finally saw her. She had long blonde hair and she was leaning on her hand and drawing in the margin of her paper. It said “For a minute there I lost myself” in big bold letters. She glanced her blue eyes at him and then looked away nervously and started talking to her friend.
“What the fuck did you do to me?” He leaned in and asked Josh.
“Nothing you didn’t want.” He said back. Ted heard a scowl and looked up at the lesbian. She was glaring at him again. He realized the teacher had already started class. She rolled her eyes at him and looked back at the teacher.
“Since this is our first class in English 101-“ Ted shot a look at Josh. They were in the wrong classroom.
“Shit what do we do?” Josh whispered.
“Hey, no talking in class. You’ll have plenty of time to talk in a few minutes.” The teacher said.
“Typical.” Ted said, rubbing his eyes and ignoring the rest of the instructions. He looked up at the blonde girl watching him. She smiled small and he smiled back at her. The room started to fill with noise as the teacher went to her desk.
“What do we do?” Josh whispered. Ted shrugged.
“So we’re supposed to get to know each other with our group.” The lesbian said with a groan.
“A pleasure to meet you,” Josh said turning on his charm. “My name is Josh, and this is my friend Ted.”
“I’m Mia.” The lesbian said.
“Daisy.” The blonde answered, quietly.
“So ladies,” Josh said leaning forwards. “What brings you to this lovely class? Do you enjoy … English?”
“It’s mandatory.” Mia said, looking at Josh like he was the biggest asshole in the world. Ted was amused at how annoyed she was. He could tell Josh was hitting on her, she was his type.
“She’s feisty!” Josh said with a grin.
“Josh my friend, you have terrible gaydar.”
“Excuse me?” Mia said, glaring at him a third time.
“Well, I’m just saying,” Ted explained. He couldn’t believe how dry his eyes felt. “I know my friend pretty well. And I know for a fact that he’s trying to hit on you. Am I right?”
“Guilty.” Josh said,, trying not to laugh.
“But clearly, you are a lesbian.” Ted sat back, and folded his arms over his chest. Mia was still glaring at them, and he wondered if it was possible for her eyes to fall out of her head.
“Are you high?”
“As a matter of fact-“
“You’re right.” The blonde said with a small grin. “She is a lesbian.”
“I’m heart broken.” Josh said pretending to cry. Ted laughed at him.
“I mean no offense.” Ted told her.
“Oh I’m sure you don’t.” Mia said, obviously not believing him.
“I’m feeling some animosity!” Josh said sitting up. “And I like it!”
“You two are obnoxious.” Daisy said but Ted could tell she was amused by them.
“Teddy how red are my eyes?”
“Like Ketchup.”
“Did you sit here just to offend us?” Mia asked, clearly still bothered by Ted’s lesbian remark.
“You’re offended by ketchup?” Josh asked legitimately confused. “I’m sorry hunny, I promise to be more polite.”
“Seriously, we have work to do.” The lesbian said.
“Actually you two do.” Ted said. “We’re in the wrong classroom.” The girls stared at them, the blonde no longer amused.
“Look they’re speechless.” Josh said laughing. The teacher called the class to order and said they’d finish up next class. Everyone started to gather their things to leave. Ted told Josh he’d see them later and followed the girls out of the door. He didn’t know why but he wanted to follow them. He wasn’t thinking.
“Hey wait.” He said. It was just Daisy, the blonde. She turned and looked at him.
“What?” She asked. Groups of people crowded the hallways and rushed past them where they stood. He wasn’t sure what to say, or what he was doing there.
“I wanted to apologize.” He said. “If me and Josh offended you.”
“Noted.” She said turning to walk away.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“You’re beautiful.” He said before he could stop it. It was his typical first line the one who told Becca, and Courtney and all those other girls after knowing them just a half an hour. Her glare softened and she looked at him like he was the biggest idiot in the world.
“Tell me something I don’t know.” She said.
Daisy turned and walked away from him as fast as she could. She wasn’t sure why she was so furious. This guy obnoxiously made fun of her best friend and he didn’t even know her. Now he’s following her and telling her she’s beautiful?
She walked so fast she got to her next class five minutes early. She waited outside of the room for the next class to end. She glanced around the hallway and her gaze fell on a familiar person. It was Roger, he was talking to a girl. She was beautiful, long read hair, nice curves. Daisy was jealous of how good she looked in a dress. She stood and spoke with confidence that Daisy was jealous of. She watched the girl walk away and tried to turn away before he noticed her.
“Daisy.” He said with a smile.
“Hey Roger, what are you doing here?”
“I go here too remember?” He laughed, and ran his fingers through his dark black hair. Roger Thurgood was her ex-boyfriend. He was handsome with thick black eye brows, healthy tan skin, and dark brown eyes. He was once everything she ever wanted. They broke up about a year ago, and she was a wreck. Sometimes she felt like she was still longing for him. She wasn’t sure if it was true or if she was just lonely.
“How are you doing? It’s been a while.’ He said with a sweet smile. She looked at him hoping you couldn’t tell how confused she was.
“I’m good, I’m mad summer is over…” She trailed off she didn’t know why she was so nervous, they were just talking. “Who was that girl? She looks familiar to me.”
“Who? That red head?” He asked giving her a look. “Her names Kate. We had a class earlier. I think she’s from South Buffalo.” They fell quiet, and she looked around nervously. She could tell he was still staring at her though.
“You look good.” He said, giving her a look that made her sort of uncomfortable. She gave him a doubtful look.
“Hey, I got to go to class.” She said. “It was good seeing you Roger.”
“You too, Daisy. If you want to text me-” He said as she rushed to the classroom before he could finish his sentence.
Ted fell into Josh’s couch with a sigh. He was glad the first day was over, but he had a sinking feeling in his chest knowing the semester was just beginning. Josh was sitting next to him casually rolling his joint.
“What a terrible day.” Ted said, lighting his cigarette.
“You expected it to be good?” Josh asked, not looking up. He finished the joint and pressed it to his lips. “So how is your broken heart?”
“Shut up Becca wasn’t…”He paused, “I don’t have a broken heart.”
“So yesterday, when you were sitting here drinkin, crying the blues, that was what? Temporary insanity?”
“Basically?”
They didn’t talk much while they smoked the joint. Ted was deep in thought about Becca, and Jill, and Kelsey, and Emily and all the other girls he’s wronged, or who have wronged him. He thought about the lying and the cheating and the schemes. He was sick of girls and how they made him feel.
“I think Im giving up women.” He said and Josh started to cough and choke on his smoke.
“Hilarious, Ted.” He said coughing. “Funny joke.”
“No Im serious.” Ted said, sitting up. He thought it was the best idea he’d ever had. “I’m giving up women.”
“Forever?”
“Forever.”
“Excuse me for being skeptical.” Josh said. “You have a different girlfriend every month. There is no doubt in my mind that there was some hot girl in one of your classes that you’re dying to make yours. You won’t do it. I don’t believe you.”
“I will.” Ted said his voice was flat. “I’m done with them. Who needs them? I got everything I need.”
“You can’t fuck yourself, Ted.” Josh said with a grin. “Or maybe you can, I don’t know.”
“Fuck off.” Ted said with a laugh.
“Prove it. Prove you’re over women.”
“What?”
“What starts next week?”
“October.” Ted deadpanned.
“Hockey season.” Josh said. “If you make it until the end of hockey season without so much as kissing a girl, I might begin to believe you.”
“Apirl? That’s easy.”
“You think it’s easy?” Josh said with a grin. Ted could tell Josh found the whole conversation amusing.
“Piece of cake.” Ted shrugged. Josh grinned at him deviously. He got up and rushed out of the room and Ted knew to follow him. He followed his friend into his bedroom. Josh was standing in front of his closet.
“Care to make a wager?” Josh asked, he looked like it was Christmas morning.
“Explain.”
“The bet is, You may or may not make it till the end of hockey season without kissing a girl. Right? Loser has to take the winner to a Sabres game, wearing this.” Josh reached into the closet and pulled out an old hockey jersey on a hanger. “I bought this for just such an occasion.”
“You actually wasted money on that?”
“It was a Thrift Store gem.”
“So you want me to kill myself?”
“Hey man, if I lose I’ll have to wear it too.”
The jersey in Josh’s hand was a Dallas Stars Brett Hull jersey. The man was infamous in the eyes of most residents of Buffalo. He’s known for an infamous blown call by the Hockey League’s referees the last time the Buffalo Sabres were in the Championship game. It was the teams third overtime when he scored the game winner with his foot in the blue crease of the net. A rule that was illegal at the time. The league changed the rule almost as soon as the next day. That was in 1999 and ten years later you sometimes still saw the old “No Goal” stickers that used to populate the city.
“Have we got a deal?” Josh asked, sticking out his hand for Ted to shake. Ted grinned knowing he was going to win.
“We have a deal.” They shook hands, and the bet was on. “You sure about this? You know how much shit you’ll get for this.”
“Yeah right, Ted.” Josh said full of confidence. “Let’s get back to smoking, lover boy.” They left the bedroom and went back to the living room. Ted didn’t think about any girl for the rest of the night.
