Inkheart film

Possible spoilers ahead! Don't read if you want to see it unspoiled in Jaunary!

I saw Inkheart today, finally. I've run into the same problem I always have with films that are based on books I love: I can't tell if it's a good film. I unfortunately spent a lot of the film going "Well, that's different from the book...but not bad...well, that's different, but why?" and so on.

I think it was a good film. I enjoyed it, I liked the actors and thought they did a good job. Although, Paul Bettany had a weird accent at the start. And having Roxanne played by Jennifer Connelly was inspired. Very sneaky of them.

Costume design...a bit crap. That maid costume the mom wore was so Handmaid's Tale. And the magpie looked like the hag from Robin Hood. I had always imagine the magpie more....like the Wicked Witch of the West at the start of the Wizard of Oz. Very stern and perfectly dressed in a black wool dress. Or maybe like the evil headmistress from A Little Princess.

The film's very different to the book, I can't deny that. But having re-read it recently I can see why. The book does have a bit of unnecessary to-ing and fro-ing that would have killed the dramatic moments.

Farid was so sweet, I really enjoyed when he was on screen and just wish they'd had more of him. I also feel they didn't do justice to Eleanor's character. She came off very flat and stereotyped crazy lady.

Basta was terrible. Completely wrong person to play him, they made him goofy and stupid rather than very scary because he's so ruthless.

I also wished they kept to the ending in the book, but I think they all knew a sequel wasn't likely so they happied it up a bit. I have suspicions there may be an alternate one on the DVD.

Anyway, you poor American based people won't get to see it till January.
