Sunday night around 7:00pm the power in our house shut off. Lights went out, internet connection failed, heater stopped running, TV went dark. We killed time playing a "rousing" game of Apples to Apples, light candles, and then went to bed early. It was already 57 degrees in my bedroom at 10:00 when I settled down to sleep. Woke up in the morning with the power still off and my room temperature hovering around 43 degrees. We got dressed quickly and then drove to Dunkin Donuts for hot coffee and sweet treats. We did a little x-mas shopping and then headed back home for a little. Some friends of the family offered to make us dinner and let us stay over for the night. We packed up pillows, blankets, air-mattresses, clothing, towels, etc and went to their house. We had hot roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, broccoli, and dinner rolls--and let me tell you, after a night and day freezing that was one tasty meal. (I didn't eat the meat of course, but the rest was good).
Next day we went to the house to see if we had electric yet. No such luck. There are electric trucks near by working on some other downed lines so maybe we'll be next. Dad and I packed some more clothes and drove to my sister's place (limited internet access) about an hour away. Mom has to work so she'll stay with the friends we stayed with last night. After work though, she'll check again to see if we have power, and if we do we will come home.
The ice knocked out the power in TONS of homes nearby, and our house is apparently the only house on the block that lost power, so we aren't a priority. This is so annoying in many ways. I can't really go to work during this, since I need to be home to get the phone calls from the schools. Plus I don't enjoy working when I can't be in my proper environment. I need to bake Christmas cookies, wrap present and BUY more presents.
Plus, despite leaving the faucets dripping, it's possible that if we don't get electric back soon our pipes will freeze anyway, which will be a horrible situation. Especially, this close to the holidays. It would be a big money and time suck. And a BIG mess.
So send us some good vibes...for heat...for electric...for no problems.
ice,
weather,
no fucking electric
