San Fran Safety
My computer's giving me 6 minutes to post. Here's the deal:
I'm in San Francisco right now. My hotel tries to pretend it's quaint and upscale at the same time, but it's really one block away from some major slums of town. I've spent the past 10 minutes printing out crime report maps of San Francisco, and it isn't pretty. If I walk a half-block north and one block west, I put myself in the middle of drug haven. If I go to drug haven OR a half-block south and one block west, I find a bullseye in robberies. If I go 2 1/2 blocks south, I find a clustering of assaults. That's within the past 28 days.
I've got these maps to plan my route to the conference center carefully. I'm living way too close to these statistics, and I sure don't want to become a statistic myself. In the meantime, the computer they've got at the hotel charges by the minute. That's going to limit how much I talk to all of you, unless they have some good connections at my conference center.
I'll tell you all about my trip next week...assuming I make it through this week.
