It's been a hard year for my volleyball scumdogs. Even with recruiting three new players, our team's had numerous injuries. Most of our wins came early in the season when we were healthy and other teams struggled to get going. We got a record 16 wins by forfeit and skyrocketed into first place. Then the other teams gained on us, and just last week we lost to the sixth place team.
Last night was our tournament. We were still in second place from early season momentum and got to play against the third place team for our life. For whatever reason, we always play our strongest against this team. Our best 2-of-3 tournament dragged on for an hour and a half. We won the first game and lost the second before a brutal tie-breaker game.
Meanwhile, the first place team slaughtered fourth place. During our second and third games, they were using the other court to practice their killer spikes.
Our nail-biting tie-breaker game finally ended in our favor. For only the second time since 2009, we were headed to the championship! Now we could repeat history of getting wailed on by the first place team.
But a few points in, we learned something. Those hard spikers on their team couldn't do much of anything else. Balls hit at them got shanked to who knows where. We actually had a shot if we didn't panic. We dug up spike after spike and wailed back on them, and we watched them self-destruct in disbelief. It was like they'd never had anyone hit back at them. We won two in a row and the tournament was over. We'd won the tournament!
Go Scumdogs!
