Well, I wanted to write, so this is what happened. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own Grey's Anatomy.
I didn’t think that I would ever be here again. Maybe on vacation, but that was a big maybe. The last time I was here, I did it as a favor to the man who was now greeting me at the door of Seattle Grace Hospital. My old “Prada heel” stomping grounds.
I never thought that I would ever see Richard again. Sure we talked on the phone every once in awhile, checking up on each other. But, the last time I was here, I thought for sure that it was my last. I didn’t know then that my younger brother would need to come here. I didn’t know then that I was going to be seeing all of the “Seattle Grace Gang.”
“Addie! It’s so good to see you again!” Richard greeted me at the front doors of the hospital.
“Hey Richard,” I said as I pulled my old boss in for a hug.
“So, have you given any thought about coming back here? Being my head of the neonatal department?” he asked me as he led me inside.
I just laughed at his statement, and shook my head. “No, Richard. I told you the last time. You need to fill my position.”
He sighed in defeat, “Well, it was worth asking.”
I frowned, “You haven’t filled my position yet?”
He stopped walking, and I quickly followed suit. I could tell that something was bothering him, because Richard usually was a cheerful person. But this time, something was just not right.
“Richard, is there something you need to tell me?”
He clicked his tongue, and looked at me. “Addison, my hospital is number twelve. Number twelve. I can’t get anyone to stay and I can’t get anyone to come. Nobody wants to be here. I have placed numerous calls to other hospitals looking for someone to fill your position, but once they heard that we are no longer number one, they all backed out.”
“Oh,” was the only thing that I could say to that.
“Yeah, oh. Plus, I have interns who were cutting up each other into little chunks, and residents who are fighting with each other. No wonder the board rated us that low,” he spat.
I shook my head, “I’m so sorry Richard. I had no idea.”
“It’s okay Addie. I’m trying to find a way to get this place back to where it is supposed to be.”
“Well, I know that Mark and Derek are still here. They should be bringing in more revenue,” I stated.
“You would think that having two world class surgeons on staff would do that for your hospital, but apparently that doesn’t even help.”
“I really am sorry, Richard.”
I was sorry. Richard had built the surgical program from the ground up. He was the one who had four world class surgeons on his staff. No body else could manage that.
“I know you are, but enough of that. I need to get you up to see Derek so you can talk to him about your brother.”
I nodded my head and followed him into the hospital. As we were making our way through the lobby every once in awhile a nurse would glance in my direction, and just stare at me. I was used to this by now, because after I first came here, I got them daily. Nurses and interns sending daggers at me with their eyes. I was the one who broke up “the couple.” I was the one who ruined the magic of Meredith and Derek. I got that, in fact I knew that. But what people back then didn’t realize, was that I still loved him. I did. I mean, who can not love Derek. He is a great guy; one who I knew would never hurt me. But I hurt him. I didn’t just hurt him, I destroyed him.
Richard and I made it to the surgical floor. We walked up to the nurses’ station where a very tense looking Mark Sloan was sitting next to a young, brown headed intern.
“Sloan, have you seen Shep?” Richard asked him.
“Uhh, not recently. The last time I saw him he was going to a patient’s room.” Mark replied, while turning to look at me. “Addie! What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to see Derek. I need to talk with him about a case.”
Mark looked quickly at the intern sitting next to him, “What case? He didn’t mention that you were coming.”
“Umm, Mark…Archer…Archer is sick,” I said nervously.
Mark’s head snapped up at Archer’s name. “He’s what?”
“He…He’s here to see Derek.”
“Who’s here to see me?” I heard someone say.
Derek walked up to me at the nurses’ station. There was something different about him. He seemed…happier. No, not happy. More…ecstatic. In all the years I have known Derek Shepherd, I have never seen him like this before.
“Shep, why didn’t you say anything?” Mark asked Derek.
Derek frowned, “What are you talking about?”
“I told Mark about Archer,” I whispered to Derek.
“Oh, I didn’t think that I should be the one to tell you. I thought that maybe Addie had called you,” he murmured.
“Well she didn’t.”
Derek sighed, “I’m sorry. I just thought that you knew already.”
“Derek, I haven’t talked to Mark since I was last here. I probably wouldn’t have called you if it wasn’t about Archer,” I said to Derek.
“Speaking of Archer, where is he?” Derek asked me.
“He is at the hotel, with Sam and Naomi.”
Mark frowned, “Sam and Naomi are here, too?!”
It was a matter of seconds before Mark and Derek were bickering over why Derek didn’t tell him that I was coming. While the two were arguing, I watched out of the corner of my eye at the intern that was sitting next to Mark. As soon as Mark started talking to Derek, she slowly crept away from him. I didn’t know if she was intimidated by them talking or if she didn’t think that she belonged there. I took a step over to where she sat, and watched her carefully. After a moment or two, she glanced up at me.
“Hi, I don’t know if I’ve met you before, but my name is Dr. Addison Montgomery,” I said as I held out my hand to the young woman.
She stared at my hand, and slowly brought up her hand to shake it. “I…I know who you are,” she said with a hint of nervousness in her voice.
“You do?”
“Yeah, you were the head of the neonatal department, but then you left for LA.”
I nodded my head, “Yeah. That’s me.”
She halfway smiled at me, and then turned back to her charts that she was working on. I didn’t know this girl, but there was something familiar about her.
“I’m sorry, but were you here when I was working here last?”
She shook her head, “No. You had just left to go to LA.”
“Well, the reason I’m asking, is that you look strangely familiar.”
“I…I do?” she breathed.
“You’re not related to anyone here by chance?”
“Umm…my half sister works here,” she murmured.
“Oh, she does?” I knew she looked familiar.
“Yeah, Meredith…Meredith Grey.”
A look of shock crossed my face at the mention of the name Grey. “Lexie!” I heard Mark call her name.
“Yes, Dr. Sloan?” she said with a hint of a smile.
“Go to room 3226 and check on my patient for me. I need to know if his vitals are still stable.”
Lexie quickly got up and said to me as she grabbed her charts, “It was nice talking to you, Dr. Montgomery.”
“It was nice talking to you too, Dr. Grey,” I said with a smile.
She quickly disappeared from the nurses’ station, and dashed down the hallway.
“Jeeze, Mark. You didn’t have to do that to that poor girl,” I said to him.
“Well, sometimes you have to be around here,” he said as he got up from his chair and walked away from the station.
“I have a surgery to prep for. If you want to, you can go catch up with some people or you can hang out in my office if you want. I’ll be there after the surgery, so I can see Archer’s case,” Derek stated.
“Oh, ok. I’ll go and talk to Richard.”

I walked around the corner and made my way onto the bridge that led to Richard’s office. I could hear a swarm of giggles up ahead and quickly looked for the source. I spotted Izzie and Meredith walking towards me. Meredith was showing Izzie something on her hand, but from here I couldn’t tell what it was. As we got closer to each other, I heard Izzie say to Meredith, “When did it happen?”
“Well, he kinda blurted it out one evening when you and Alex weren’t home,” she replied.
“Aww, Mer that’s amazing! I’m so happy for you!”
“Thanks, Iz,” Meredith replied.
“Dr. Grey and Dr. Stevens. It’s nice to see you,” I said cheerfully as the two were almost face to face with me.
“Addison,” Meredith breathed. I saw that she quickly pulled her hand out of Izzie’s grasp, and placed it behind her back.
“Dr. Montgomery! How are you?” Izzie asked me.
“I’m doing good. How are you two doing?”
“Umm, we’re doing fine,” Meredith stated as she glanced at Izzie.
“That’s good to hear.”
They both looked at me with a mixture of fear and nervousness. I knew something was up with Meredith, but I just couldn’t see what it was.
“So, Meredith how did the trial go?” I asked.
“Oh, umm, Derek got it published.”
“Really? That’s great! I’m so happy for you.”
“Thanks.”
Izzie turned to Meredith, “Are you going to show her?”
Meredith quickly shook her head.
I frowned, “Show me what?”
“Meredith is getting…oww! Hey!” Izzie rubbed her arm where Meredith hit her.
“Okay, what’s going on?” I asked.
“Nothing,” Meredith breathed.
I placed my hand on my hip, “Meredith, when I walked around the corner, I saw you showing Izzie something on your hand. I know you probably have a ring there, so you might as well get it over with and just show me.”
Meredith sighed, and slowly pulled her left arm away from her back. There it was. A ring on her fourth finger. But…wait…that can’t be. Can it?
“Where…where did you get this ring?”
“My fiancé gave it to me.”
“No, where did you get this ring. I know this ring,” I stated.
Meredith was turning paler by the minute. I could see that she was panicking, “Yeah,” she whispered. “You should know this ring.”
“Derek…”
“Yeah.”
I was speechless, “Wow…wow. You…you and Derek…just wow.”
“Um, thanks,” she breathed.
I pulled her in for a quick hug. I couldn’t believe it. They were actually doing it. Derek and Meredith were going to get married. This…this…oh my god…
“I’m sorry to do this, but do you mind if I go? I need to go talk to someone,” I asked the two.
“No, no. You can go,” Meredith murmured.
“Yeah, it’s okay Dr. Montgomery,” Izzie added.
“Congratulations, Meredith,” I smiled. And with that I turned on my heel and quickly went to OR 2.

“DEREK SHEPHERD!” I yelled as I walked into the scrub room.
He quickly turned away from the sink, “What?”
“YOU DIDN’T TELL ME!!!”
He frowned, “Tell you what?”
“You…you and Meredith…you and Meredith are engaged?!”
He smiled at the word engaged, “Uh, yeah. We have been for a week.”
“Again, WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?!”
I was furious at this point. They had been engaged for a week. A week. And, in that week, I had talked to him on the phone ten times. Ten times.
“I thought that you wouldn’t want to know.”
“What kind of an answer is that? You didn’t think that I wanted to know that you were engaged?!”
He frowned, “Well, in my defense I didn’t think that you would like to hear that I was getting married again.”
At this I had to laugh. Not just any laugh, but one of those laughs that starts out quiet and gets louder and louder as it goes on. He didn’t think that I would like to hear that he was engaged. Is he out of his mind?
“Derek! I have been supportive of your relationship with her. Even though I hated it in the beginning, I knew that you loved her. Did she tell you what I said the last time I was here?”
“No…”
“I told her that she shouldn’t let you go. That you being with that nurse that was the most stupid thing she could ever do.”
He just stood there in awe, not saying a word.
“Well, you need to get back to your surgery.”
He cleared his throat, “Uh, yeah. Yeah, I do.”
I turned and walked to the door of the scrub room. I opened the door and looked back at him, “Congratulations, Derek.”
He smiled, “Thanks, Addie.”
And with that, I closed the door.
I hope you all enjoyed it! Comments are always welcomed!
