Ok guys, this is coming to the end now! I hope you've enjoyed it. I'm sorry this chapter's very late, but tomorrows wont, I promise =]
Chris had moved from Jack’s office to the sofa. He couldn’t even look at Rose anymore, and so Owen had covered the body with a thin white cover. They had all gone back to normal duties now, and they were thankful that the Rift had behaved itself.
Chris leaned further into the sofa and watched the others go around him. They knew about death, knew how to deal with the consequences but Chris didn’t. He was still in shock, thinking that any second Rose would come out of one of the doorways. He just couldn’t get his head around the fact she was laying on that cold table.
“Can’t you bring her back?” He spoke, breaking everyone’s momentum. Toshiko was nearest him and turned around to answer him.
“There’s nothing we can do, Chris, I really am sorry. If there was anything, I swear, we’d do anything possible. We see too many people die in this job.” She looked at Chris lopsidedly and smiled, “you’ll be ok.”
“I hope so. I don’t know how I can live without Rose. She was everything to me. Everything is going to change now.” Chris looked up at Tosh, he managed a smile back then watched as Jack passed them, heading for his office.
“So what happens with me? Do you just chuck me out now?” Chris asked, stopping Jack in his tracks.
“Once we’ve sorted all this out then, yes, we will take you home. But you can never mention this to anyone, you do, and we’ll have to come after you.” Jack replied, he didn’t look most pleased about having to let him out of Torchwood still knowing what it was about. Normally he would have just slipped it in his drink but this was different. Maybe it was time for people to know about Torchwood, if the SUV wasn’t enough to give them away then spoken word may be better.
“Of course. I won’t say a word. No one would believe me anyway.” Chris nodded, looking down at the floor the whole time.
“Ok, then we’ll take you home.”
There was a long silence, both Jack and Tosh looked at each other, not knowing how to carry on the conversation in any way.
It was only when Jack begun to walk to his office again that Chris spoke. “No chance me working for Torchwood then?”
“Sorry?” Jack stopped, turning around and placing his hands in his trouser pockets.
“Well, I’ve got nothing else. I know about aliens, I know about you. And it seems a hell of a lot better than the job I got at the moment.” Chris suggested, it was only a suggestion, one of those mad, of-the-moment things that you regret after saying them. Chris cringed slightly. “I’m sorry.”
“You think you can handle it? Everything that can happen here? You’ve only seen three days.” Jack waved his hand around at the Hub.
“And those three days were the worst three days of my life. It couldn’t get worse.”
