Second-hand roses
keiki_boys has been posting memes in her LJ, and they kind of struck a chord with me.
She's been talking about dolls that she's either re-homed (for those of you who aren't in the hobby, that means she sold them) or purchased second-hand. If I went down the list, I'd have to point out the first doll I bought not second- but third-hand. That's right, I am the third owner of Kyo, my beauty white Dolkot Hara. He's got the quirky Dolkot old-type body, and I have plans to massively modify it, but I wouldn't give him up for anything. And to think, the doll wouldn't have existed if para_chan214 hadn't seen the Dollshe Hound. He's on his third face-up (the one he came with was nice but not Kyo) and his third pair of eyes, but he's still Kyo, and I wouldn't get rid of him. Who else am I going to get to wear all his lacy underthings.
Second on my list only sort of counts as a second home. The girl who sold me my Limited Edition Dream of Doll Elf Ducan hadn't really even played with him. He just wasn't the doll she wanted. He was, however, the doll I wanted very badly. I knew from the first time I saw a picture of him that he would be perfect for Luz (Lucifer, my bad boy angel of light). And he is. I've airbrushed him (and will again, soon, I hope) to give him a tan. para-chan helped me with his face-up. He IS Luz.
Third on my list is actually one I re-homed. To someone else in this house. I bought Demian and Eliud from the artist Ricky intending to use the heads interchangeably for the character Ryou-inu/Raien. Since I ordered a body for them (gods, I hope the neck size is right), I have been looking at them and thinking about face-ups. When para-chan stripped the face-up off of Eliud, we talked about doing one face-up on Demian to be both aspects of the character. And so I sold my Eliud. From the start, there was always the chance that he wouldn't be Raien but Raein's son, Cair (who is L-chan's character). Seeing him now, with different eyes and a different wig, I think he'll be an excellent Cair and L will be a good owner for him.
At the bottom of this list is the Doll in Mind Achernar that I bought from a woman on DoA who really needed the money. At the time, I'd decided that the Volks FCS sculpt I'd been lusting after just wasn't Xan, and then I saw Achernar. He would need modification, but he would work. Getting him home, I was actually quite happy with him. Getting him into a proper wig only improved things. I made him clothes that didn't quite fit how I'd hoped, and then everything sort of fizzled out. It was nice having someone for Cyr to hang out with, but I haven't had the time or attention span for him. He's just not getting enough love. And now I've found a sculpt that might work better for him. So, at this point, there is the chance of getting a different (what did para-chan call it?) shell for Xiang to reside in. For the moment, he is still Xiang, sitting with Cyr on the table. But eventually, he may become para-chan's doll, and then he would be ShiFen (who is, incidentally, a variant on Cyr, which would be kind of strange but also sort of neat).
So, I suppose I can't feel bad about "re-homing" my boys in the same house where I live. It's kind of like hearing para-chan say she wants a scuplt that I actually quite like. If she buys it (eventually), then I get to have one around and it doesn't have to be mine. And L-chan and I both really like one of the Kid Delfs. If she gets it, I still get to admire him from close up. It's all good.
