So I wrote this earlier while playing because it popped into my head and Brendon pissed me off.

Summary: May calls Brendon and agrees to meet him somewhere.
Warnings: Slight spoilers for anything up to the happenings at Mt. Chimney in Emerald.
Notes: I don't know.....

May let out an exhausted sigh while staring at the ceiling of the Pokemon Center. Being a Pokemon trainer was a lot more difficult than she had thought it might be. Sure, she knew it was going to be difficult. Her father used to tell her stories about his adventures back when he was a rookie trainer, and his travels all over Hoenn. She didn't remember his own adventures being like her's so far. He hadn't dealt with strange people, doing strange things. And she was pretty sure he'd never been used as a liasion for the a huge corporation.

Not that she minded a whole lot. The Devon Corporation created a lot of Poke-goods, and in helping them out she got some good merchandise for free. The Pokemon Navigator was especially useful, and if they hadn't given her one, it would probably be a long while before she could have bought one herself. The journey so far would have been much more difficult had she not gotten one.

There was the thing with Team Aqua though, and now a team called Team Magma. May had heard of them before. They were on the news often from causing problems and chaos around Hoenn for their own causes. Never had May dreamed that she'd be caught up in the activities of the radical environmental teams, but here she was. She'd already foiled Team Aqua's plans on a couple of different occasions, and was now going after Team Magma. To be fair, she hadn't been asked this time around just because she was nearby. But the resercher in Meteor Falls seemed so upset and worried. Besides, she didn't even want to think about what Team Magma might to at Mt. Chimney with a metorite and whatever diabolicle scheme they had up their sleeves. Team Aqua was headed to stop them, but May didn't have much faith in Team Aqua's abilities anymore. Not after she'd trounced a good portion of their members. Then again, maybe they kept anyone worthwhile in reserve.

"Here you go Miss, your Pokemon are all fighting fit now." Nurse Joy announced, coming over to her with the tray of Pokeballs. "We hope to see you again1" The pink haired nurse smiled and May thanked her as she took the balls and fixed them to her belt.

She walked out of the Pokemon Center adjusting her backpack. After a moment of consideration she reached into the bag and pulled out the mini umbrella she'd bought at the Fallabor Poke-Mart. She'd come through Route 113 without it, and by the time she'd reached Fallarbor she was covered head to toe in ash. Ash was difficult to wash off. As she was moving the bag back around her Match Call caught her eye and she picked it up considering it. She was thinking she should call someone. Give her something to do. Flipping through her list of contacts only a couple really stood out to her. She kind of wanted to call her dad, just to hear his voice, but decided not to. She could handle things by herself. She also considered Professor Birch, but the last time she'd called Professor Birch he'd irked her, telling her that she could own more Pokemon to catch up with how many she'd seen. She owned practically forty already! How many did Brendon own? That was who she could call, Brendon. She hit the call button on his number.

"Hey." he answered casually.

"Hey Neighbor."

"May, what's up!?" He sounded excited to hear from her. This made her smile.

"Ehh not much. Making my way back to through ash road aka Route 113. You?"

"Ha! We're not far from each other. I'm on Route 111. I'm planning on stopping at the old lady's house to get some rest. I've been training all day. You should stop by too, if you're headed back this way."

"I'll do that. Maybe we can have a battle?"

Brendon laughed good naturedly, but it made May roll her eyes. Sometimes she felt like Brendon was treating her as a kid who had never seen Pokemon before. Even though she'd beaten him the first time they ever battled together. And the next two times after that. "Okay, we can battle."

"Cool. See ya at the Old Lady's house then."

May hung up and threw the Match Call back into her bag making her way onto the ashen route. She was torn between liking Brendon and disliking him. He was nice in a way, but it was a condescending nicety. Like he felt obligated to help you out because he was better than you. May strived to prove that he was in no way better than her, and that they were equals. Sure his dad was a well known Pokemon professor, but her dad was a gym leader. Even if that was a recent appointment. She supposed that the term rival fit Brendon well. They were always competing, but it was friendly.

It was early evening by the time May reached the old woman's house on Route 111. She hoped Brendon wouldn't want to challenge her immediately. Her Pokemon were worn out from the trip and it woudn't be fair. She pushed the door open with a knock and a quiet greeting. The old woman was sitting at the table in the main room and smiled kindly at her.

"Hello dear. Do you need to rest. I can fix up your Pokemon for you."

May returned the woman's smile. "Yes, please, that'd be very nice." She took off her Pokeball belt and handed it to the woman. "Is Brendon here yet?"

"Who?"

"Um, boy about my age, white blonde hair, green headband. Pokemon Researcher wannabe."

The woman placed the Pokemon in the machine, much like the one in the Pokemon Centers. "No dearie. You're the only one here right now. A couple of trainers stopped by earlier this afternoon, but they didn't stay long, and none of them were blonde."

"Well thank you."

"Have a seat and rest up dear, while your Pokemon are resting. You look tired."

May did have a seat. She was a little worn out herself but she'd been in worse condition. Instead, though, she was worried about why Brendon hadn't shown up. He should have been there long before her. She was pretty sure that if something came up and he couldn't make it, he would have called her. So maybe something happened. What could have happened though that would make him incredibly late and not allow him to call. The only things she could think of were none too good.

After an hours wait May decided to call him. She still hadn't heard anything, and he hadn't shown up yet. May had been killing time watching TV at the old woman's house, and she didn't want to impose any further. She pulled out her Match Call and dialed his number, stepping outside.

"Hello?"

"Brendon. Where are you?"

"May? Um, I'm at the Pokemon Center in Mauville right now. What's up with you?"

May frowned. Brendon totally ditched her. "Well, I'm at the old woman's house on Route 111."

"Oh! Are you!? I didn't think you would make it. I got a call earlier from someone saying that there was some Team Aqua and Team Magma skirmish going on up in that direction. I headed back to Mauville because I didn't want to get caught up in it, and I didn't think you'd get there."

She sighed. "Naw, I got here just fine. The Team Aqua/Magma stuff is happening at Mt. Chiminey. Besides Team Aqua and I go way back."

"Well it's good to hear that you're doing all right. I gotta go though. I'm headed off to the Day Care Center for now. I'll see you later."

"Yeah sure."

May hung up with another sigh. This was a wasted trip, though she supposed she'd gotten in a bit of extra training, which couldn't hurt. Still, she would have liked to see how she was matching up against Brendon. If she could have beaten him it would have made her a lot more confident about going up against Team Magma or Team Aqua or whoever she'd come up against. That was also before she learned that he was avoiding them.

It didn't matter now though. She shouldered her backpack and left the rest house headed toward Mt. Chimney. As of now she had Team Magma to take care of. She could worry about Brendon later.
