Alfred’s always been very fond with any ship he got in his possession. He was the same with animals, Arthur came to notice once went they had to transport horses. He spoke with a gentle voice and eased his hand over them. There was always a look in his eyes that Arthur adored, a sort of gentle look, that made Alfred’s crazy personality seem farfetched.

When Alfred purchased Adventurer, he was excited and so proud of the ship that needed a great amount of TLC. He handpicked the crew for it, well for the most part. He made sure each member shared a sort of fondness for the ship.

Arthur couldn’t for the longest time. He saw all the things that went wrong more than the good things. Alfred said he had to try; Adventurer was a good ship, who was very much like him. Over time, Arthur did find that. The Firefly-class ship was out dated and a dying breed, but Adventurer pushed thought along with a few others. Arthur had been similar in many ways. He finds himself petting the ship just as much as Alfred can be.

He’s quite sure there’s a look in his eyes that his fond as well. He’ll catch Alfred staring and storm off, smiling to himself about the stupid lovey grin on Alfred’s face. Of course he’ll get whatever is coming to him that night in their shared bunk.

Still things go wrong, and the crew scrambles for to fix them. Alfred might start losing his temper, but he never directs any of it towards Adventurer. Still things have never gone so wrong where they were just stuck in space, living on the last of everything.

“We’re going to have to leave her.” Alfred said, coming into the medical room with a sad smile.

“I know,” Arthur said gently, petting the counters of the room without much thought. “She did us good though.”

Alfred makes a sound of agreement, glancing around the room when Arthur looks at him. “Very good, indeed.” Alfred breathed out.

Arthur walked over and took him in a hug. Adventurer had been something they both purchased after the war. Wanting to escape the world of defeat that landed heavily on the Independence’s heads. Alfred had heard ships brought work, and Arthur sure as hell wasn’t going to be getting any form of work with the Alliance after his stunt. Adventurer had become their home and child and was dying around them.

“You got an intercom.” Alfred asked when they broke away.

Arthur nodded and didn’t ask any questions as he silently pointed. He listened as Alfred called a group meeting, and as the crew came out of their little holes and jobs. All with a saddened look, but not as sad as Alfred or Arthur who had been the founding members.

A quiet sat on everyone for a while, just breathing and a bit of taking up space. Arthur heard Yao mutter a prayer, Ivan’s scarf giving him a bit of fading warmth. Matthew looked tired and Francis’s hair had been meeting with his fingers a lot. Elizaveta was covered in grim and the bad news of the dead engine.

“Everyone will take a shuttle down to Persephone,” Alfred said, “you won’t be able to land, but ships come and go regularly you might find someone willing to pick you up and take you down.” There was a grim understanding. “Ivan, load up your weapons and take Yao with you, I’m sure you can sell them for a good price and get some supplies to live till you find another job. Mattie, Francis, and Elizaveta will take the other shuttle. Someone will need a pilot and an engineer, and I’m sure Francis will find something.”

“What about Arthur and you, Alfred?” Matthew piped up with a look of worry.

Arthur swallowed. “We’ve already agreed that if anything happened to…Adventurer, we would stay with her.” Arthur said pushing himself off the doorframe.

“But-”

“Matthew!” Alfred snapped and his brother stopped his upstart. “The decision is final.”

The pilot got quiet fast. Francis placed a hand on his shoulder, offering a little support for his lover. “We should get moving. The quicker we leave, the longer you two will last.” Francis said gently, getting up and easing Matthew up as well.

“Thank you, Francis.” Arthur said when he realized Alfred was oddly silent beside him.

The crew vanished and Alfred took a deep breath. “There are things we can do as well.” Arthur nodded, taking Alfred’s hand into his own and letting him lead the way.

----  ----  ----

“Put the bloody gun down, and don’t you dare move.” Arthur snapped from up on a platform above the cargo bay.

The crew who was boarding with promise of parts and help, their saviors, traitors to the name, started at him. Arthur would admit he wasn’t much, but in the dying life support he probably looked crazy and not someone to be fooling around with. Still the other captain was cockier that Alfred could be at times.

“You’re out numbered,” the man said smugly. “If I remember correctly you’re a doctor, we could always use one of those. I would rather not be shooting you.”

Arthur isn’t fazed. “I can fix the human body, but that doesn’t mean I can’t destroy it either.” Arthur cocked his gun; it earned him a gulp and step back. “But the part down and go back to your little ship.”

The other crew glanced around, and Arthur was making a stand, not even he would stand up to himself. Arthur lost his temper easily over two very key things, Alfred and his eyebrows. Messing with Alfred was a hell of a lot worse than his eyebrows. Alfred gives him a look as he lies of the floor, trying to keep as much blood as he can.

“Do as he says,” the captain said suddenly, backing away. The crew started to protest. “Our lives are worth this piece of crap anyway.”

Arthur fired, purposefully missing them, but sending them running a bit faster. Alfred had worked his way over to air lock controls and slid the doors shut. Arthur stuck the gun in its holster and flew down the stairs and over to Alfred. There was blood everywhere, but something Arthur was use to seeing.

“Bloody hell,” Arthur cursed, putting pressure on Alfred’s side. “Getting shot.”

“Artie, I’m fine.” Alfred tried, wincing with the pressure and pain.

“You’re bleeding, form a bloody bullet wound.” Arthur snapped.

Alfred grabbed at him, smeared blood on his face and gave him a determined look. “Fix Adventurer, then fix me.”

“Alfred-”

“You’ll have more time that way.”

“Pyen juh duh jiou cha wen,” Arthur breathed out in a small laugh. “Don’t you dare bloody die.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

----  ----  ----

God must have put the idea in Elizaveta’s head to explain the engine of Adventurer to Arthur. Help him put it in terms of the human body so he had some understanding of it. Arthur could have kissed her when the Engine came to life and all the alarms and life systems warning calmed down.

He fell to his knees and just about cried, finding himself petting the metal of the ship and uttering words of encouragement. Then he remembered Alfred and run through the ship like a mad man.

God must had seen the purpose of him being a field medic as well. Arthur made quick work of the fading Alfred. Watching as he stabilized, it was then that Arthur took a deep breath and laid on the floor exhausted. Alfred’s soft breath soothing him as he collected himself.

He was about to roll over and get up to push the call back button, when Alfred spoke. “Art?”

“Adventurer is going to get to see some more adventures.” Arthur said, placing a kiss on Alfred’s forehead.

“That’s a girl,” Alfred said sleepily, “and that’s my husband.” His hands rubbing both the floor and Arthur’s messy head of hair.

Arthur grinned, he had a feeling there were be a lot of adventures to come. “Relax love, I’m going to hail the other’s back.” Arthur said getting up and leaving Alfred laying there as he dosed off.

Adventurer had a fond look to her metal as Arthur made his way to the bridge.

AN: Wow, this is so heavily influenced by Out of Gas.  Adventurer is their ship name, I couldn't think of a good one.  But they go on lots of adventures so, yeah.  Yao is a merchant who helped the crew in buying things and getting killer deals.  He's kinda like Inara, but not a Companion.

Hope you enjoyed, this is going to keep going.
