Wow. This photo makes me realize just how many years I've been reading your blog. It's been what, nine years since Luna launched? It's crazy weird (and crazy awesome) how the internet lets us be connected to people for so long without any real interaction. Were I to run into your nephews on the street in five years, I would no doubt wonder what movie I'd seen their kid brothers in, "'cause they look awfully familiar."

Just out of how-environment-shapes-language curiosity, do they speak with an Irish or American accent?

American. The people who taught them English have American accents, after all. But the older one, who is more self-conscious about not sounding like other kids his age, uses an Irish accent quite a lot of the time, and they will both no doubt be able to switch back and forth at will all their lives.

I used to think this was a cut-and-dry thing, but then I met a bunch of people whose parents immigrated to America who have no ability to use their parents' accent. There are a lot of cultural and individual influences that go into the choice, apparently, so I was just curious. Love me some linguistic anthropology!
