MCU & Jessica Jones

I’ve watched the Jessica Jones trailer, which is not particularly usual for me, and I’m profoundly torn on it.

On one hand, FINALLY we get a female-led superhero story. Jessica Jones is a good character, long varied comic book history, popular following, etc: all of that is good. Like every character who’s had a showcase of (up until now, his) own ( Read more... )

I want to agree; I reread this post and wanted to pop in and add one more thing: Janet was not a victim. Everything she did was her own choice and her 'death' was actually more of the noble sacrifice type.

But yes, Hank was unable to let go after his loss. But IMO that isn't about a gender power dynamic, that's a relatively normal reaction to loss. It SUCKS for Hope and it forms the entire basis of her now dysfunctional relationship with her father, because she resents and rebels against it.

In a lot of ways, and the reason I keep saying this, the story is about how Hope deals with this. In now way are she or Janet ever depicted as victims, and it's her story, not Scott's. There's a great line in the middle of the movie where Scott actually figures out what's going on and tells Hope, straight up, and it kind of jolts her because she couldn't see through her own resentment. I thought it was pretty beautiful.

Also, and this matters to me, she is basically more competent at everything superhero related than Scott except for his ONE schtick, which is breaking in and stealing stuff. Everything else? It's totally about Hope. She's smarter, stronger, more skilled, more talented, more driven.

It really set her up to be a GREAT character in the next movie.

Plus, I'm convinced we'll actually see Janet somewhere down the road.
