from the sketchbook of Madison Allen...

While I haven't been writing Harper's Island lately, Madison's still been in my head. The following two sketches are creepy, but not at all gory, and the subject matter shouldn't squick anyone. I think. They're actually kind of clinical, imo, and I need to stop talking about them or you'll never want to click the cut.

The basic idea Madison is exploring is a fusion of the human body and trees (gosh, wonder where *that* idea came from?). Seriously, though, not gross at all, at least not this set.

This first pic didn't really do what I wanted. It's an interpretation of a banyan tree. I figure Madison would be attracted by the ropy, almost vein-like nature of the roots. While it didn't get as muscley as I wanted, it started feeling off in a creepy way, which I want a lot more of.

This one, however, surpassed my expectations and I love it to pieces. Creepy and wrong from start to finish, this was amazingly, frighteningly relaxing to draw. Plus I got to experiment with different pencil weights (mechanical, 5B and 7H, for those who want to know that kind of thing) and really love how they worked together. I never really had much use for H pencils, but now I have changed my mind.
