More thoughts on HBP, chapters 27 -28
Okay, I admit when I first impression was that when Snape killed Dumbledore he was doing it because Dumbledore asked him to, because it was important to save Draco. Then as I read further, I wasn’t so sure. I got distracted when Harry called Snape a coward and Snape returned with an insult toward James and I thought, oh no, Snape really did kill Dumbledore because he was bitter at Dumbledore, James, Harry, etc. Bitter about everyone who had made him miserable. (He was, I'm sure, unhappy that he was required to work with the Order, with people he disliked). I was crushed to think Snape would kill Dumbledore for nefarious reasons and I was buoyed in my thinking by everyone else believing so easily that Snape was a traitor.
Snape, I had no faith in you. I’m just like all the rest.
So, obviously, now I feel differently, having reread that passage and I’ve found a few other curious things.
~ Why did Dumbledore put Harry in a full-body bind? Was it to protect Draco from Harry? Harry would have mucked things up for sure, perhaps even provoking Draco to hurt kill Dumbledore after all. The added bonus is that Harry now knows that Draco couldn’t go through with it. And as
sistermagpie mentioned to me
earlier, he witnessed Draco’s breakdown in the bathroom.
Speculating onward, I always liked the idea of Draco being an obstacle for Harry on his way to Voldemort. Actually, my shippy heart loves this idea. Now he has something to work with to disarm Draco, talk him aside, perhaps. It’d be difficult, Draco won’t take pity from Harry, but he could offer help. I’m absolutely convinced Draco would have stepped aside and allowed himself to go into hiding if the Death Eaters hadn’t interrupted then.
~ Snape doesn't truly hurt Harry. He also stops the other DE from harming him. He had Harry in a vulnerable position without a wand, he could have bodybond him and taken outside the nearby gates and apparated him to Voldemort. He could have really harmed him. He didn't. He seemed more interested in getting Draco and the other DEs out of there.
~ According to Ginny on of the DEs, the big blond one, killed one of their own by accident.
~ Snape and Draco also opted not to use the two-way cabinet to escape back to Borgin and Burkes. Harry thought that perhaps they didn't go that way because it was blocked.
rampant speculation: I wonder if the last two are related and if Snape opted to take Draco elsewhere, away from Voldemort. Maybe this is fanon talking to me but I’ve always gotten a protective vibe from Snape about Draco and I like the idea that Snape might step in Lucius’ stead and keep watch over Draco. I am disappointed, however, that Draco won’t be in Hogwarts anymore. (and neither will Harry, as
miss_charmed reminded me).
If Snape and Draco are on the run, they really don't have any allies. Wow, I want someone to write a Snape/Draco on the run story. Is that a ship I never thought I'd be interested in.
Boy, Draco, you really did a number on yourself, but all is not lost. You didn't kill Dumbledore and you could have hurt Harry worse on the train. And I'm so glad my prediction about you was correct. You're not a totally bad kid, just misguided.
Hang tight, Draco! Harry will find you! er, please.
