ETA, even though it probably won't be read, I would like to note for posterity:
Birthday greetings are not given in a desire to make the recipient feel old. They are not given to remind one that life plods ever onward and that there is a due date for one's accomplishments. They are not given grumpily and out of obligation, nor are they given with a mean spirit intended.
They are given in celebration, and to say that I am glad that you were born. I am glad that you are here to celebrate another year with us. I am glad that I have the opportunity to wish you well. I am glad that there is a reason to celebrate.
That is all. I will not apologize for wishing one well on the anniversary of one's birth, nor will I discontinue the practice.
