Chapter 1: Arrival

Chen felt goosebumps forming on his skin as his steps echoed in the empty, dull-colored corridor. Honestly, the asylum wasn't a friendly pleace but the black-haired male was determined to help the people here.  He was one of the volunteers. Plus his uncle was here, it just added to his motivation.

"Good morning." A small smile bloomed on his lips when one of the nurses came across him, greeting him with a polite nod.

"Good morning. You are here earlier then usual, Chen."

"Yes, I couldn't really sleep." Nobody knew what was the real meaning behind those words that often left the angelic male's mouth and Chen wanted to keep it this way.

"Oh, you must be excited because of the new patient." The nurse chuckled.

"New patient?" Chen's eyes widened in honest curiosity. In the asylum it was always a big thing when somebody new arrived.

"Haven't you heard about it? A new patient, as I know he is around your age, arrives today." The woman looked at her watch. "Oh, very soon!"

"Chen, can you come to my office?" The male's boss sttod next to the stairs with a gloomy expression on his face, not leaving any chance to the other to protest so Chen bowed to the nurse and followed his boss.

He couldn't really control his nervousness, no matter how hard he tried. His heart raced, wanting to jump out of his chest as his eyes followed the well-known ambulance car and his palms sweated. It was really a big thing for him, his boss told him that it will be his duty to care about the new patient mentally. Of course, there were psychologists and psychiatrists but his boss asked him to be the newcomer's friend.

The asylum looked like an anthill, all of the doctors and patients were in the garden, waiting for the new guy to arrive. Gossips have already started to form about how dangerous he will be or what mental illnesses he had...

But when a boy with messy, light brown hair stepped to the ground, everyone became quiet all of sudden. No, he didn't seem dangerous but there was something strange with his aura. Maybe the way his clothes seemed a little bit too big for him or the way his eyes looked deep, deeper than an ocean yet empty, like a dry well. Or maybe the two guards added to his scary appearance who held his wrists in their iron grip as if he were a criminal or something. Chen's heart clenched at the sight but he learned that these insane people who had to go to the asylum could hurt the others or even themselves.

"I'm Xiumin." The stranger's raspy voice startled everyone, even the doctors and Chen felt a chill running down on his spine as Xiumin's dark eyes connected with his for a moment. For the briefest moment while the patient nodded politely then the guards dragged him away.  The anthill became noisy again, the nurses guided the patients back to their rooms, only Chen stood in the garden, still under the spell of Xiumin's eyes.

Chen felt nervous, although he almost got used to the feeling during the day. He couldn't really concentrate, every thought of him was directed to the mysterious newcomer so after 2 hours of doing nothing, he gathered up the courage to visit the boy in his room.

His fingers slightly shook as they came in contact with the smooth and cold surface of the doorknob but he took a deep breath and opened the door... only to meet the panicky-looking newcomer who reached for the doorknob as well. The minutes stood still until Xiumin pulled back his hand with a small gasp.

"What are you doing here?" His voice sounded unfriendly but Chen spent enough time with mentally ill people to see through the mask.

"Athazagoraphobia. Xiumin fears of being forgotten or ignored." His boss's words echoed in his mind and he stepped into the room and closed the door behind himself. He knew he won't leave the patient alone.

"I just came to talk with you. My name is Chen." He offered a small smile, watching as the other sat back on his bed, playing with the hem of his white shirt he wore.

"I'm insane, why are you want to talk with me?" The sincerity, mixed with heavy sarcasm dripped bitterly.

"It's an asylum, everyone is insane here." Chen gestured with his hands.

"You are not."

"To a certain point, I am."

"Yes, because you work here as a volunteer. No sane person can do it." Xiumin scoffed, resulting Chen to raise his eyebrows.

"Oh, then why am I here? I should leave..." In the same moment Chen moved toward the door, the patient shot up from the bed.

"No!"

Another small smile appeared on the angelic boy's lips as the chubby cheeks were colored with a light pink colour.

"Stay please." He murmured, not daring to look into the other's eyes.

"Of course, if this is what you want."

Awkward silence lingered in the simple room. Simple without any bright colours, just white, grey and black everywhere. A quite depressing sight, according to Chen.

"I hate this place. I'm going to run away." The patient stated in a calm voice like he would speak about the weather, causing Chen to let out the small sigh. He experienced this, it was a common thought of the patients in their first day.

But before he could protest, something caught his attention.

"Why are you barefooted?"

"At least I have this little freedom that allows me not to wear shoes or socks. They are annoying and they restrict me." Xiumin replied, looking into the other's eyes for a brief moment.

"Do you like freedom?"

"Yes, although I've never experienced it really." With a swift move, he grabbed his T-shirt, right above his heart, letting out a painful gasp.

"Xiumin?" Chen's heart skipped a beat in fear. He has never seen any of the patients having an attack...

So that was the first chapter. /sighs/ What do you think about it? Bad? Good? Boring? Short? Should I make things more darker and scarier?

Please let me know :)
