Nichkhun walked out feeling defeated, he had never known Wooyoung to ever hurt him like that.  He could see why Wooyoung had done what he did, certainly he knew it was out of love for both him and Alex but he had been with them for months and never had Wooyoung told him about Alex being his son.  Then his thoughts went towards Suzy, the silent regret he had kept all these years.  How he managed to make that slip up years ago was still beyond him but he knew exactly why he had become so weak.  That day was still a little too vivid for him to remember.

~~~
The last year of college was just starting and Nichkhun was busily moving into his dorm.  He was excited because he had learned that he would be rooming with his old roommate, and best friend Wooyoung.  Wooyoung hadn’t arrived yet and Nichkhun wanted to make sure that everything was perfect for the boy’s arrival.  He hadn’t told anyone yet, not even Wooyoung but since last semester Nichkhun had formed a small crush on the other.  At first he tried to deny it as just a close friendship but over the summer as he counted the days that he would see Wooyoung again he realized that it was much more than friendship that he was much more attached than he thought.
Nichkhun was cleaning up and putting things away when the door opened.  Nichkhun looked up excited to see Wooyoung but rather he saw Taecyeon, Wooyoung’s friend carrying some boxes.
“Where’s Wooyoung?”  Nichkhun asked.
“He’s coming up.  I’m just helping him move in.”  Taecyeon smiled.
“Oh.”  Nichkhun said.  It wasn’t that he didn’t like Taecyeon, in fact they had been friends too but he was aware that Taec had a certain habit of coming too close to Wooyoung.  Nichkhun asserted that this was jealousy on some level but moreso because he couldn’t find the courage to be that forward with Wooyoung despite his desires to be.
Wooyoung came running up, his bags in hand.  “Thanks Taec, you can put those in my room.”
“Anything for you sweetie.”  Taecyeon replied and proceeded to put the boxes in Wooyoung’s room.  Wooyoung smiled as he saw Nichkhun on the floor unpacking.
“Hey stranger.”  Wooyoung said and dropped his bags.
Nichkhun stood up and smiled.  “Hey.”  He wanted to say more but he couldn’t even hear himself over his heart beating.  Wooyoung ran over to him and jumped in his arms.
“I missed you.”  Wooyoung said still hugging the other.  Nichkhun was in relief knowing it wasn’t only him.
“I missed you too Woo.”  Nichkhun said.  Suddenly Taecyeon reappeared making coughing noises.
“Um..Woo, I put your things on your bed.”  He said and Nichkhun let go of Wooyoung shying away as if they had been caught kissing.
“Thanks Taec.”  Wooyoung smiled.
There was an awkward silence as Nichkhun looked at Taecyeon and Taecyeon looked at Wooyoung and Wooyoung was stuck in the middle.  “Sooo… I’ll catch up with you later Taec.”  Wooyoung said.  Nichkhun seemed to become relieved at the boy’s dismissal but the taller boy kept still.
“Actually, Woo… I was wondering… would you like to go out with me tonight?  I know this sounds weird but I’ve been meaning to ask you out since last semester - I was just shy but this time… I want you to know that I really like you.”  Taecyeon said nervously.
“Taec?”  Wooyoung was confused.
Nichkhun felt his mouth go dry, the temptation to say his feelings was now imminent but before he could speak Wooyoung had already answered.  “Sure.”
Sure?  Sure?  Nichkhun excused himself from out of the room.  He sat on his bed kicking himself that he hadn’t said anything earlier and now Wooyoung was going out with Taec.  It took a few more moments till a soft knock came at his door.  He wanted to be left alone, but never in his ability could Nichkhun turn away Wooyoung.
“Hi.”  Wooyoung walked in and sat on the floor facing him.  “I hope it’s okay that I’m going out on our first night here.  I know we usually go to dinner on our first night.”  Wooyoung said reluctantly.
“It’s fine.  Taec must really like you… he asked you out.”  Nichkhun wanted to be supportive.
“Yeah… I guess.  It’s nice, I mean he’s nice --- it’s just….”   Wooyoung started to say then decided maybe he should say anything.
“What?”  Nichkhun asked.
“Oh nothing.  He’s just not my type.  He’s good-looking, and he’s really funny but I don’t know.”  Wooyoung turned his head and realized Nichkhun’s room had been almost completely unpacked and settled.   “You work fast.”  Wooyoung noted.
“Was waiting for you.” Nichkhun got up and decided maybe if he didn’t have to look at the other he could sort of block out any images he was having of Wooyoung being with someone else.
“Khun… I know I said I’d go with Taec, but do you think it would be really bad if I cancelled?”  Wooyoung asked.
Nichkhun wanted to affirm that but if he wasn’t ready to admit to Wooyoung he certainly had no reason to stop him.
“No, you should go.  He mustered all that courage to ask and you already said yes.  You should go.”  Nichkhun said keeping his back turned to the other.
“But… I’d rather hang out with you tonight.”  Wooyoung said making it even harder for Nichkhun to keep his façade.
“We can hang out when you get home.”  Nichkhun tried to be nonchalant.
“Are you sure?  I mean… I want to…”  Wooyoung started to say but Nichkhun interrupted.
“Yes, Youngie.  Go.  You’ll have fun.”  Nichkhun said.
Later that night Nichkhun was eating his words, wishing Wooyoung would have just stayed home as he was stuck in the dorm by himself. He wanted to hold back Wooyoung, but because he just wasn’t certain how he felt about the other he thought it was unfair.  Wooyoung had left a few hours ago, and it was soon almost 10 pm.  Nichkhun hadn’t been able to eat dinner nor do anything for that fact.  He wasn’t one to drink in his sorrows but at that moment it was the only thing he could think of doing to get his mind off of Wooyoung going on a date with Taecyeon.
He defaulted to the local bar just a block away from the dorms, spying the regular group of students that frequented the club.  “Hey Khun, Where’s Woo?”  Junsu asked.
“He’s out… he’s hanging out with Taec tonight.”  Nichkhun replied.
“Taec?  Holy shit, our innocent Woo is going to lose his virginity tonight!”  Junsu said in a drunken chuckle, it might have been a joke but it was large enough to break the concentration of the Thai.  Beer after beer, Nichkhun started to feel better and when Junsu spotted a table of new freshmen girl’s Nichkhun had been dragged into the drinking circle.  He sat next a shy one, who seemed out of place and intimidated by the forward advances of the older guys.  Nichkhun could feel her arm shake and feeling a bit more outgoing he decided to ease her a bit.
“Relax, we don’t bite.  Except Chansung, he’ll eat everything.”  Nichkhun winked at her.
“Sorry, this isn’t really my scene.”  She said clutching her soda.
“I can tell, you’re drinking soda.”  Nichkhun joked.  “I’m Khun, senior, business management major.”  Nichkhun smiled.
“Suzy.  Freshmen.  Undecided.”  She answered.
“Well welcome Suzy, hope you’ll like your college experience.  Nothing kicks it off than having a drunken night.”  Nichkhun tipped his beer bottle.
“I guess.”  She said nervously.
The girl was cute, in fact very pretty and if it wasn’t for a certain someone Nichkhun might have been interested to play the game.  He had almost forgotten about Wooyoung but everytime he tried his heart tugged him back.  He eventually got the girl to ditch her soda and she was soon sipping on a mix of vodka and red bull.  After the fifth cup, she was clearly drunk and much more daring than before.
“I think you’re really cute.”  She said leaning into Nichkhun.
“Thanks.”  Nichkhun said his mind starting to sober.
“Yeah, you’re like the hottest guy at this school.  Your girlfriend must be really lucky.”  She smiled.
“I don’t have a girlfriend.”  Nichkhun answered.
“Then I must be the lucky one.”  She smiled and leaned in to kiss him.  Nichkhun felt the brush of her lips but the only thought that came into his mind was Wooyoung.
“But I am sort of seeing someone.”  He corrected her.
“I see.  Oh well, you can’t blame me for trying… you’re hot!”  She winked.  Nichkhun smiled politely and looked away. “Look, I’m ready to go home… you think I can call you cab to get you back to your dorms?”  Nichkhun asked.
“Noooo, that’s okay.  I’ll walk back with my dorm mates.”  She said too embarrassed by her forward actions.
“Okay, I’ll see you around.”  Nichkhun said hoping he would never see her again after the awkward conversation.  He walked out onto the street and felt his phone buzz.  He was too excited to hope that it was Wooyoung asking him to pick him up, instead his brother’s name appeared on the screen.  Nichkhun answered the phone call.
“Khun, it’s me Chan… I have to tell you something really important.”  His brother’s voice was shaky.
“Chan, what is it?”  Nichkhun’s mind ran with the worst case scenario and his brother began to break down with then news of their mother’s death Nichkhun’s eyes overflowed in tears.  He had hoped to have her at his graduation to see all the things he would accomplish in life, but after their father had left she had grown ill and recently took a turn for the worst.
“Khun, she’s gone.”  His brother confirmed it and all Nichkhun could do was lean his back against the wall to hold himself up.  He didn’t know what to do, all he knew was that he needed someone… he needed Wooyoung.  He tried to catch each tear with the wipe of his sleeve but they fell to fast and too quick and his eyes went red.   He began to walk down towards the dorm but laughter near him stopped him as he heard two familiar voices.
“Oh hey Khun.”  Taecyeon called out.  He looked up to see Wooyoung smiling, Taecyeon’s arm around the other’s shoulders.
“Khun, what’s wrong?”  Wooyoung’s smile faded as he freed himself from Taecyeon’s arm and ran to him, holding his waist as Khun dried his tears.
“Nothing.  I…I… just feel really ill.”  NIchkhun lied.
“Well let’s get you home then.”  Wooyoung took his hand but Nichkhun snatched it away.
“I’ll be fine.  Finish your date.”  Nichkhun said.
Wooyoung stepped closer and whispered to his face.  “Khun, if you’re not feeling good I won’t leave you alone.”  Wooyoung insisted.
“Are you having a good time?”  Nichkhun asked. Wooyoung was reluctant to answer but slowly nodded.  “Then please don’t let me spoil it.”  Nichkhun rubbed Wooyoung’s cheek.  “I’ll see you at home.  Be safe.”  He said.  He started to walk away and Wooyoung looked at him confused.  Nichkhun kept walking and decided now was the time to drink in his sorrows.  He purchased a bottle of gin from the convenience store and found an empty stairwell where he took large swigs of the liquor attempting to drown in the alcohol rather than his tears.
He had finished the bottle and attempted to walk home but found himself stranded in another dorm lost.  He had no dignity or pride at this point and decided to knock on one of the doors to ask for help.
“Sorry to wake you but can I use your phone?” He asked without looking up.
“Khun?”  A girl’s voice sounded.
“Hey…you…. You’re that girl.  Suzy.”  Nichkhun was surprised he remembered.
“Yeah… are you okay?”  She asked.
“No, I’m too drunk to get home.  I was going to call my boy…my roommate to come get me.”  He said.
“Oh, well you can stay here if you can’t get home?”  She offered.
Nichkhun looked at her and at that moment, maybe it was his drunken state more than anything, he saw Wooyoung’s lips and he decided he had played enough games.  He crashed his lips against hers and without rationale or reason he had mistaken her for Wooyoung.
The next morning Nichkhun woke up in the empty dorm room, his head throbbing in pain.  He gathered his clothing and began to get dressed, aware of what had happened the night before but for some reason his mind could only see Wooyoung.  He was about to leave when the door opened.
“Oh good you’re still here.”  Suzy smiled, a cup of coffee in hand.
“Oh shit.”  Nichkhun said in his mind but just smiled. “Yeah, sorry for last night.  Thanks for letting me stay.”  Nichkhun quickly threw on his shirt.
“It’s okay, I kinda liked having you here.”  She said handing him a cup.  Nichkhun looked at it and took a sip, but all he could taste was the bitterness of his regret.
“Look, last night… it was a mistake.  I told you before I was seeing someone, and they mean a lot to me.”  Nichkhun said.
“I see.  I know you told me that last night, I just thought since we…had sex… you had changed your mind.”  The girl said.
Nichkhun had hoped he had just imagined that part.  “I’m sorry, I really didn’t mean to take advantage of you, I was drunk… I know you could tell.”  Nichkhun said.
“You’re right, I sort of took advantage of that… but… nevermind.  I understand, I might be young but I’m not stupid.  Whoever you’re in love with is really special.”  She said sitting on the bed disappointed.
“He is.”  Nichkhun answered.
“He?”  She looked up.
“I’m sorry, I should have told you that… but it wouldn’t matter because it doesn’t matter to me, I love him still.”  He replied.
“I can see that.”  She said looking away.  “Well, at least we can be friends?”  She asked.
“Sure.  I’ll see you around.”  He said wanting to get home to Wooyoung.  He reached the dorm thinking Wooyoung was asleep in his room, but instead he found Wooyoung asleep on his bed.  Nichkhun sat next to him and brushed some hair from his face.
Wooyoung started to stir and sat up when he saw Nichkhun.  “Khun!  Where were you?  I was so worried!”  Wooyoung threw his arms around the other’s neck.
“Sorry, I… I needed to be out.  I sort of got bad news last night.”  Nichkhun said.  Wooyoung immediately took Nichkhun’s face into his hands and wiped the dried tears from his face.
“What?”  Wooyoung asked worriedly.  “My mom passed away yesterday.”  Nichkhun said.  Wooyoung’s eyes immediately started to cry as he held Nichkhun in his arms.
“Oh Khun, I’m so sorry.”  Wooyoung held him tight, this was exactly what Nichkhun needed the night before.  Wooyoung let the other cry for a few moments and it wasn’t until a few minutes after that Nichkhun realized why he was really crying.
“Woo, promise me something?”  Nichkhun asked.
“Anything for you Khun.”  Wooyoung said.
“Promise me that if I do the worst thing ever, that you’ll try to forgive me.”  Nichkhun asked.
Wooyoung pushed away and looked into his eyes lovingly.  “I will because I love you.”  Wooyoung said. Nichkhun retreated back into the other’s arms
~~~

Nichkhun walked up to the steps of the Child Welfare building and walked up to the receptionist.

“Can I help you?”

“I’m here to pick up my son.”  Nichkhun asserted.

“And his name?”

“Alex…Jang.”  Nichkhun said.  After an hour waiting to confirm tests, Alex was released to Nichkhun was welcomed the boy with a hug. “Are you okay Alex?”

The boy nodded and started to look around.  “Where’s Daddy Woo?”

Nichkhun didn’t have the heart to say it just yet so he smiled.  “We’ll get him tomorrow, is that okay?”  Nichkhun asked and the boy nodded in hesitation.  “I’ve missed you son… and I promise Alex, I won’t ever leave you.”  Nichkhun said.

“And you won’t ever leave Daddy Woo too right?”  Alex said and Nichkhun paused.

“Right.  I won’t ever leave Daddy Woo too.  I love you, Alex.”  Nichkhun said.

“I love you too Daddy.”  Alex hugged him.  “And you love Daddy Woo too, right?”  Alex added again.

“Why is it that everything I say to you I have to say to Daddy Woo too?”  NIchkhun smiled.

“Because I belong to you like I belong to Daddy Woo… so you belong to Daddy Woo too.”  Alex said.  Nichkhun was impressed by that reasoning but it made so much sense to him.  “Of course, I belong to you and Daddy Woo. Come one let’s go home.”  Nichkhun said, Alex’s hand in his.
