My name is Reita.
I’m a swordsman, one of the highest knights in this kingdom where King Aoi and Queen Sally rule wisely with their magnificent power for more than two decades. I’ve been living in this magnificent palace before I even turned eleven, but no…I wasn’t born here. I’m not a descendant of one of those royal families that have been living here since centuries ago. In fact, I couldn’t even remember my ancestor. But of course, there is a reason why a stranger like me was brought into this palace, why someone who isn’t a blue-blood like me occupy a vital and strategic position in this kingdom which is reigning almost half of the globe.
I’m a guardian.
Oh, and no, I’m not His and Her Majesty’s guardian, no. I might be capable for being one those powerful swordsmen, but there are greater knights who deserve that place. Besides, King Aoi and Queen Sally were great soldiers when they were still young, and they still are, which means that they don’t need my service that much. But that doesn’t mean that my job is not less important and not even less dangerous.
As I said before, my position in this kingdom is vital. I’m not just an ordinary guardian because what I must protect is far more precious than any of those crowns and jewels all around the world.
There he is, standing elegantly outside his room balcony, glancing down at thousands of soldiers lining up perfectly in front of the palace, ready for a war that’s waiting for us today. His angelic face looks content, watching the sea of people down there with his beautiful brown eyes. A hand grips the handle of the sword sheathed perfectly on his slim waist while the other one touches the concrete brick wall beside him.
He is my top priority. He is the royal family that I serve, my one and only master. He is the one that I have to protect. And before you can ask further, yes, I’m ready to die for him.
He is Prince Ruki.
He’s the only son of His and Her Majesty, the future king.
And he’s the only reason why I’m standing here right now.
Twenty years ago Prince Ruki chose me, a homeless boy, to become his servant after I saved him from wolves that almost attacked him when the king visited my village. I was brought to this palace right after that incident and since then became a royal servant. King Aoi provided me with foods, shelter, and education, those things that I never imagined I could get even after I begged in the streets for a year.
I served Prince Ruki everyday with all my heart. He was such a brilliant kid, a little bit shy, but still a very energetic one. He was smart, charming, and humble. He was like a beautiful little sun in my life, with those addictive laughs and carefree smiles. I played with him, laughed with him, cried with him. I practically grew up with him. I was his one and only friend.
But it was Her Majesty Queen Sally who noticed my talent in combat and martial arts a few years later. When I turned fourteen, she gave me my first sword and introduced me to Kai and Uruha, two greatest swordsmen this kingdom have ever had. That one particular day, the queen told me that I was a servant no more. That one particular day, Her Majesty asked me to become Prince Ruki’s guardian, a proposal that I would never reject because even though I was only fourteen, I could only see him in my future.
Six years later, it was me who taught the royal prince everything about tactical combat, martial arts, archery, and swordplay. He became some sort of my protégé. Even though he deserved to get those lessons from the elder masters, he didn’t want it. He personally asked the King to have me as his mentor, and I was more than happy to teach him. The result was more than satisfying, may I add. Four years ago he successfully led his own army in an important battle against a group of traitor and actually won it without asking for help from us, from me, here in this palace.
We eventually became brothers, best friends, partners…and…something more…
I honestly say that I’m proud of him. So proud of him.
The blaring sound of those ancient royal trumpets wakes me up from my daydreaming. The time has finally come. Today we are all going to a war, the greatest war this kingdom has ever faced. Our enemy is a lot stronger and more evil, more dangerous. The king himself will lead us from the front row, along with our greatest knights, along with you…with us.
And honestly, my prince, this war isn’t going to be an easy one.
I take a couple of steps forward to reach your beautiful presence in front of me. You don’t need to turn around but I’m sure you know that I’m currently standing beside you, because it’s where I belong. Your right hand abandons its grip on the sword and reaches down to touch mine. I can feel my heart beating a little bit faster as you hold my hand softly, giving it a light squeeze as a mute declaration that you need my support now. And you know that I’m more than ready to give my all to you, anything for you.
I hear you heaving a content sigh as your eyes travel down. I follow your gaze and see those soldiers now forming squares as their commanders join the group. The grip in my hand tightens and I can tell that you are nervous. But I can understand that since this is your first big war, and I know that you already anticipate it.
“Can we win this war, Reita?” you softly ask.
It’s difficult to answer, my prince, because this war is not like our previous ones. But I don’t want to scare you, I don’t want you to back away from your destiny.
“Of course we can, my prince.”
I know you know that I’m lying, but you give a respectful nod nonetheless.
“And what if things get worse…?”
There’s a sign of doubt and fear underneath your words and somehow it makes me worried. But I do know that you’re stronger than this, more powerful. You’re stronger than what you look like.
I turn to look at you and give you a meaningful stare.
“I will never leave your side, my lord…”
That will never happen. As long as this heart is still beating, even in its weakest state, I will always protect you. It’s an oath, a promise that I will never break, ever.
Your soft cherry lips curl up softly, forming a mesmerizing smile that can melt even the coldest heart in this world. It seems that I said the right thing because now I can feel you entwining our fingers together, creating a symbolic knot that speaks much more than just a simple gesture between two people.
It speaks of trust…and faith…
“Then I’m not scared, Reita…not with you watching my back…”
And your final words makes me believe that no matter what will happen in front of us, no matter where the destiny will bring us, I will never ever leave your side.
Because all I can see…is you…
Because my future…is you…
