First committee findings damn fraudulent Tilburg professor
The committee set up to look into the work of the Tilburg professor accused of faking research data said on Tuesday that more than half of the first batch of reports they have studied are definitely fraudulent.
The committee, chaired by Pim Levelt, said that of the first batch of 20 publications, 12 were falsified by Diederik Stapel and three contributions to books were also fraudulent.
Stapel, who was a professor of social and behavioural sciences at Tilburg university, was suspended in October 2011 after doubts emerged about research that concluded eating meat makes people anti-social and selfish.
An initial investigation showed at least 30 academic papers contained data Stapel had invented. The Levelt committee is making a detailed search of all Stapel's work and will release the results in batches.
A spokesman for Tilburg university said these first results are not surprising. 'They are the foundation under the earlier conclusion about Stapel's work.'
The committee says Stapel committed fraud by using non-existent data, implausible conclusions and 'highly unlikely' results.
A website was set up on Tuesday to publish the findings as they appear over the coming months. The committee hopes to publish its final conclusion in the autumn.
