Whiskers and EyesBlue

As most know I have more than triple the cats that I need in my home but I love them and feed them and clean up after them every single day. MatSuhn has been with me the longest. He is a unique cat. He knows his name and he actually will come to you if called. When he was younger he would play catch and fetch with the little furry toy I had purchased for him. He was rambunctious to the point of climbing a silk tree, toppling it over and shattering my very old antique tea set. I forgave him the mishap but put most breakables away until later. His feet are huge and fluffy as is the rest of him. When he was young I didn’t think he would have the long flowing fur that he sports now, it is a soft angora type fur that is silky and fine. Of course it gets everywhere that hair could fall including my mouth as he sleeps close to my face with his huge paw placed delicately upon my nose.

His whiskers are what have intrigued me from the beginning. They encased his face like long white feathers. When you scratch him under the chin his reflexes bring them all to stand at attention. One fell out the other day and I found it nestled between the pillow and the sheet as I made the bed. I was shocked at how long it was, close to 5 or 6 inches. I looked at my other cats and theirs were not as long. Their fur is short and sleek. My daughter had the answer for me. Their whiskers grow as wide as their body is so that they can sense how close they are to their surroundings.

Honestly I think they are just there to tickle my nose as he snuggles under my chin and licks my face.

Last night MatSuhn and Tanner had words. The fight broke out over food or more so the amount of distance that MatSuhn had placed himself from or between the food bowl and where he decided to walk. Tanner is not normally aggressive and this took me by surprise as I screamed for them to stop. They or I should say Tanner didn’t. He had MatSuhn shaking him and the cat was screaming while I was throwing everything I could find at them. Finally Tanner relented and MatSuhn took off upstairs with the other two not far behind him. After all was a bit calmer and I had finished yelling at Tanner who was still giving me the “Who Me, you know HE started it?” look I went to find if my cat was lying there bleeding to death. I took ‘snacks’ and coaxed them all out from under the bed for a minute of reassurance that the mean ole dog was in time out downstairs.

A couple of hours went by and as I lay on the couch I saw the three of them creep down the stairs. I called to MatSuhn and he came right to me and climbed onto my chest. I told him I thought he might consider growing those whiskers just a little longer, like a couple of feet or so. Those ten inches worth did not save you this time, he just swiped them across my nose as he turned to look at Tanner sleeping on the floor, “yeah but they sure do make you think I am the best cat in the world don’t they,” he said with his big blue eyes as I rubbed that soft angora fur.
