The Sweetest Things

I get a phone call; “Come to the Waffle House and eat with us” was said from the other end of the line. My excuse was explained, “ I have been painting and sweating, I look a mess” I said but with one more small “come on” I relent, pull the brush through my hair and throw on a clean paint-free t-shirt and head out.

Of course, the place is packed. Holiday, the Road Racers are all donning prize 2007 peachtree t-shirts and ordering pecan waffles. We wait for a table and finally slide in.

There is a little girl in the booth right next to us, wearing a purple dress and carrying her obviously favored stuffed animal. It had been loved very well in the years that she had lavished her loving upon it and it sat quietly while she finished eating her food.

Her parents finished, they gathered their money, paid the check and walked past. As this little girl passed by she looked, met my eyes and waved goodbye to me. I smiled and waved my wave goodbye as I watched her walk away.

In a moment I felt a soft touch on my arm and thinking it just the man perched on his bar seat behind me I didn’t give it a glance. I then felt another small tap-tap and I turned to see this same little girl had returned. Without a moments hesitation she said to me, “You are so pretty, you are just like a real princess” and she grinned and pulled her well loved stuffed companion closer to her neck.

Her mother appeared having come for her, most likely thinking that her daughter was bothering other patrons. I nodded and spoke to her and with tears welling up in my eyes I then looked at this beautiful little girl who had just made me feel on top of the world.

“What is your name”, I said. “Gloria Rose”, was her reply as she stared at me still mesmerized looking at her new found princess friend. It is so nice to meet you and you Gloria Rose are a beautiful princess too, you know. Thank you so much for making me feel really special today.

Thank you Gloria Rose, I will never forget you or the real princess that you have been for me today.

Those little small unexpected voices sometimes say the sweetest things.
